OFT guidance for estate agents

A consultation on draft guidance to estate agents and developers for property sales best practice has been launched by the Office of Fair Trading. The new guidance focuses on two pieces of law: the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008, and the Business Protection from Misleading Marketing Regulations 2008. How developers deal with complaints, how sales are negotiated, and how buildings are marketed, are among practices discussed in the draft. Comments are requested by 9 December 2011.

Residential REITs are highly popular and successful in other countries, so why are there none in the UK despite the fact that the market capitalisation of UK commercial REITs is £28.2 billion? This new Urban Land Institute (ULI) InfoBurst report reveals the reasons why residential REITs have not enjoyed the same level of success as the commercial sector in the UK and identifies the barriers that have prevented the sector from developing. The report examines four areas in detail: UK REIT legislative structure; Investment distinctions in commercial and residential markets; Primary barriers to residential REITS; and the future for residential REITS in the UK.

Westfield Stratford City: The inheritance before the Games

Volterra Consulting has been commissioned by Westfield to consider the economic benefits which will be created by Stratford City. Stratford City is a mixed use development in Newham, East London, which is being developed by Westfield. The whole mixed use scheme will include retail and leisure space, two hotels and a significant commercial district, along with housing and community facilities. Construction began in 2007 and the whole project is planned for completion in 2020. The retail element of Stratford City is due to open in September 2011. Comprising 1.9 million square feet of retail and leisure space, it will be the largest urban shopping centre in Europe. This report aims to investigate the impact on the Stratford, London and the UK economies of this major investment.
