The House of Commons Communities and Local Government Select Committee has published the findings of its inquiry into the Government’s approach to regeneration. The Committee argues that Ministers have no adequate strategy to address the complex problems faced by England’s most deprived communities, and that if further resources for regeneration are not found, there is a risk that major problems will be stored up for the future. The Committee further adds that cancellation of Housing Market Renewal Pathfinder funding had impacted profoundly upon the lives of people across the North and the Midlands.

The report highlights London’s focus on legacy from the outset as a key factor in planning for lasting benefit. It also confirms that the Games provide a unique opportunity to kick-start the delivery of new homes and infrastructure on and around the site. Other regeneration initiatives nearby, such as Westfield Stratford City, are also vital in providing wider regeneration and opportunities for East Londoners.

This event focused on two research questions. First one concerns what role the concentration of creative and cultural industries plays at different geographical scales and contexts? In particular, how do these concentrations work in small towns and rural areas versus the more traditional larger city perspective? The second key theme of the workshop was the challenges and opportunities of the development of creative regions in Central and Eastern Europe. Speakers were asked to present papers on case studies, investigations and experiences of the creative industries in cities and regions with special reference to their contribution to region’s competitiveness and innovativeness. The range of papers covered both theoretical perspectives and practical examples of the problems faced by researchers in trying to understand the role of creative industries in peripheral areas as well as the issues on creative regions in Central and Eastern Europe. Presentations are available online.
