Jones Lang LaSalle has published a report which explains how today’s building technology investment decisions are delivering return on investment (ROI) while shaping the way humans, machines and buildings will interact in the decades to come. Building owners, operators and investors are under pressure to manage costs, risks and energy consumption and are looking at smart building technologies to help their company’s triple bottom line (people, planet, profits).

The APP shows you the way to energy efficiency measures and renewable energy solutions. Create energy efficient buildings and even an urban neighbourhood in an interactive 3D environment! Your goal is to decrease the red CO2 bar as you install innovative technology in the 3D environment. CONCERTO is a European Commission initiative which aims to demonstrate that the energy-optimisation of districts and communities as a whole is more cost-effective than optimising each building individually, if all relevant stakeholders work together and integrate different energy-technologies in a smart way.

By 2020 the European Union wants to reduce its overall CO2 emissions to 20% below 1990 levels. Cities and urban regions are viewed as key actors in reaching the ambitious energy goals. To inspire and support cities on their journey towards energy efficiency, EUKN’s annual publication focuses on energy efficiency in the built environment. The publication provides a complete overview of what is happening on all levels affecting local government.

There are a multitude of different tools and methodologies that can be used to assess a building’s performance, some are well known such as SAP and BREEAM and others are lesser known being bespoke tools for an individual company. The Building Performance Evaluation group of the Technology Strategy Board Network has tried to collect a list of the tools and methods that are available in the UK and abroad. They would welcome any that they may have missed.

Many projects demonstrate that renewable energy and bioclimatic architecture represent cost-effective and environmentally friendly ways to improve the living conditions of rural people. However, most of the projects face significant difficulties when it comes to mainstreaming the innovation. This manual, based on the experience of six projects in Asia, aims to provide practical guidance regarding how to design a scaling-up strategy for sustainable energy and building projects. It has been produced by the SAESUp (Sustainable Architecture & Energy Scaling Up) project, which is supported by the Building and Social Housing Foundation. (BSHF).
Evaluating operational energy performance of buildings at the design stage (TM54)

This difference between expected and realised energy performance has come to be known as the ‘performance gap’. There are two main reasons for this performance gap. The first is that the method of calculating energy use for the purposes of compliance does not take into account all the energy uses in a building. The second reason for the performance gap is related to site practice. This Technical Memorandum (TM) addresses the first reason. It provides building designers and owners with clear guidance on how to evaluate operational energy use more fully, and accurately, at the design stage. After a brief introduction, which explains the need for the guidance in more detail, it explains the importance of making an accurate estimate of the operating hours and likely occupancy of the building. It then sets out how the operational energy required for the building can be estimated. As well as covering lighting, heating, ventilation and cooling and provision of hot water, it also considers lifts and escalators, small power loads, catering, server rooms and other plant and equipment. This document is available for purchase.
