This report published by the Royal Academy of Engineering is the result of an exercise to establish the costs and benefits for the UK economy in creating a network of centres of excellence in integrated sustainable design and construction. It also evaluates the need for new skills and approaches in sustainable design in order for the construction industry to deliver low carbon buildings at the lowest cost for society. It is argued that the establishment of such centres, to help the construction industry meet UK climate change policy targets, could create over £1 billion of savings by 2030 and cut carbon emissions by 3.5 million tonnes a year.

This report represents the culmination of a six-month project run by the UK Green Building Council to highlight potential areas for commercial opportunity in a future resource-constrained world. The ‘Industry Business Plan’ project brought together a cross-section of business leaders to develop scenarios for future operating environments, and conduct an analysis to determine a range of strategic options for the industry. The project aimed to give organisations the space to rethink ‘business as usual’ and take some time to model some innovative ideas that responded to the likely future operating environment to deliver high value, low-carbon and sustainable growth opportunities.
Take action on energy in buildings

Buildings represent about 40% of primary energy used and associated CO2 emissions globally, making them a critical component shaping and driving the world’s energy consumption profile and related environmental impact. However financial, behavioral and knowledge barriers have stood in the way, until now. The World Business Council for Sustainable Development will launch a new market engagement oriented project, EEB 2.0, in 2012, with the aim of triggering action and implementation that addresses these barriers, and using the understanding the first phase of the EEB project developed from 2006 to 2010. Over the course of a proposed three-year project, EEB 2.0 intends to work with key decision-makers who are responsible for, or have influence over, substantial building portfolios in the public and private sectors. The project will develop a replicable process for bringing key decision-makers and relevant stakeholders together to identify practicable energy efficiency solutions in the portfolios they control, and will serve to scale up the implementation process across other decision maker portfolios.

The green cultural network, Fourth Door, has re-launched its main web-magazine, Unstructured, increasing its web-presence, and with the journal, Sitelines, a specific focus on sustainable architecture and the built environment. Sitelines highlights sustainability and its cultural, social and political implications and contexts, in contrast to the more technical approaches often found across contemporary architectural media. The latest issue also contains a special Passivhaus section.

The recently published Today’s attitudes to low and zero carbon homes: views of occupiers, house builders and housing associations (NF40) highlighted the need for low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies that are reliable, perform to expectations and are capable of being used by home occupiers to achieve their design potential. To provide further guidance on these issues, this report investigates LZC technologies currently being used and likely to become dominant in the market. Through in-depth interviews with homeowners, carried out by the School of Construction Management and Engineering at the University of Reading, this research reports on their day-to-day use and attitudes towards these technologies.

The Passive Design Assistant tool is new software that helps demonstrate the passive design principals of buildings to non-specialists, and enables key design variables such as orientation, ventilation and thermal mass to be more easily understood. This free software was designed by a partnership of Arup, The Concrete Centre and AHMM architects as part of a Technology Strategy Board design and decision tools for low impact buildings project.
