This report acknowledges that government policies such as the Green Deal, Renewable Heat Incentive, and Carbon Reduction Commitment have encouraged some businesses and households to improve with the energy efficiency of their buildings, but argues that more urgency is needed if the UK is to achieve an 80 per cent cut in emissions by 2050.

The aim of this conference and workshop, organised by Directorate General Regional Policy, was to inform participants about developments at EU level which are relevant to the period 2014-2020, and to focus on implementation difficulties encountered and possible solutions for the future. Background papers are available, together with presentations from sessions which examined: social and economic benefits of investing in energy efficiency in buildings; financial instruments for energy efficiency investments; energy efficiency and innovation; Framework conditions relevant to investments; and experience with investing in EE in buildings in the Member States.

This event considered the latest developments in whole life carbon in construction. Key topics include embodied carbon, supply chain carbon, renewable materials and low carbon construction. As well as the latest developments, the conference looked at examples of how whole life carbon is being addressed in the construction sector and what organisations need to be working towards. Produced with Zero Carbon Hub and PRP Architects, this extensive update of the Zero Carbon Compendium (NF17) aims to create a better understanding of the issues surrounding the achievement and delivery of zero carbon housing and sets out a basis for international comparison and collaboration. The 2011 Compendium includes new exemplar projects, updates of national targets and further assessment of programmes, government policy and incentives, plus an additional 5 countries – Brazil, India, Russia, Singapore and South Africa. The Rational House

A prototype home for urban development has been built on a site in Fulham, west London. The Rational House is designed to Code for Sustainable Homes level 4, complies with the new London Housing Design Guide and is constructed using precast concrete. The house has been originated by architect Robert Dalziel and engineer Tim Battle, directors of Rational House, to provide high density, low rise, sustainable homes with design and quality at an affordable cost. The prototype, which is being marketed through estate agent Jackson-Stops & Staff, is already generating interest and the design has been included in Barratt East London’s bid to develop a legacy site from the London 2012 Olympics in Stratford, east London.

This conference offered a comprehensive review of the uptake of Passivhaus in the UK covering the standard, its suitability in the UK, leading edge case studies and practical delivery of the first Passivhaus projects in the UK. The first day examined policy, regulations and projects, including talks from leading national and international speakers. The second day focused on technical workshops and seminars covering costs, procurement, design, supply chain and other issues. Presentations are available online.

The 28th International Conference of CIB W078 “Computer Integrated Construction” jointly organised with the 7th CIB W102 “Information and Knowledge management in Building was dedicated to the latest broad achievements in research, development, standardisation and industrial implementation of advanced Computing, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Knowledge Management (KM) in the Construction sector and the Built environment. The fourth conference of the Local Renewables Series focused on green buildings and the future of sustainable urban development”. Organised by ICLEI, the conference looked at the evolving role of renewable energy in sustainable buildings and addressed the issue of energy efficiency, both from a technological and city development point of view. Issues covered in the conference included: the political framework for sustainable construction and urban planning from a European, national and regional perspective; upgrading options for the existing building stock; best practice examples of zero emission districts across Europe; cutting-edge technologies and clever design for energy efficient solutions; district heating and cooling; financing models and mechanisms, in particular, the new Energy Efficiency Fund; and challenges in the value chain of energy efficient building. Presentations are available online, together with presentations from the previous three conferences in the series.
