The Building Research Establishment has unveiled plans to develop a voluntary sustainability standard for new homes that will go beyond the zero carbon regulation. BRE has said this will allow developers to differentiate their product and is inviting those involved in the delivery to take part in a consultation about what the standard should entail. Comments are requested by 25 July 2014.

This study uses a combination of primary survey, literature review and expert stakeholder dialogue to assess the effectiveness of a range of current and pending policy instruments deemed to have a direct or indirect effect on energy and carbon performance in the UK commercial buildings sector. In addition to consideration of the instruments on an individual basis, the assessment of the functionality and effectiveness of the policy framework as a whole is a notable innovation of the study.

Arup recently partnered with climate consultancy Argos Analytics to create the WeatherShif application, which projects future weather patterns for specific sites based on climate models run for the recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report.

There is not enough investment put into FMs at a level appropriate to the complexity of the building and systems they manage, says a report to be published this week. How Much Energy Does Your Building Use, published by the non-profit National Energy Foundation (NEF), states that this oversight goes on to hinder the energy performance of buildings.

Embodied carbon is rising up the agenda and rapidly becoming a key area of focus for those working across the built environment. That is why the UK Green Building Council ran Embodied Carbon Week from 7 – 11 April 2014 in partnership with British Land, Derwent London, Land Securities, Tishman Speyer and WRAP to explore the topic in greater detail and start a wider discussion about what more can be done to advance best practice. This report summarises the feedback gained from the industry events that took place over the course of the week. It has been prepared by Arup based on summary feedback provided on sixteen Embodied Carbon week events.

Integrated support services company Carillion has released a sustainability report which updatews its progress on its 2020 Sustainability Strategy, which was launched in 2011 and delivers six outcomes across the three pillars of environmental, social and economic responsibility, including creating lasting social value and supporting sustainable communities across the UK, the Middle East and Canada.
Code for Sustainable Homes

This release shows the number of dwellings that have been certified to the standards set out in the Code for sustainable homes technical guide. It provides a breakdown by local authority area, by Code level and whether the homes are registered as private or public sector homes.
Retrofit for the future: Reducing energy use in existing homes

This report shares the lessons from a research project that set the target of cutting CO2 emissions from existing homes by up to 80%. The Technology Strategy Board’s Retrofit for the Future programme explored retrofit innovation through 86 home upgrading projects. The research programme was supported by government and delivered with the support of industry partners including the Energy Saving Trust. The looks in detail at the lessons from 40 of the projects. It identifies six priority areas that provide a framework for successful retrofit: retrofit planning; building fabric; indoor air quality; services; working on site; and engaging residents.
