As part of its Urban Infrastructure Initiative, the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) has released its latest report on Yixing, a city of 1.25 million inhabitants which was selected as the pilot city for China. The Urban Infrastructure Initiative was launched by the WBCSD in 2010 to provide an interdisciplinary team of experts from industry who would work with city officials to assist with infrastructure development in the city. The report outlines wide-ranging solutions, covering energy and transport, integrated under an overall approach to urban planning in the city. Two issues were singled out for immediate action on sustainable urban planning: rational land use and appropriate urban structure; and protected ecological and cultural assets through compact mixed-use urban design and green infrastructure.

Cities Today is the leading magazine on sustainable development of cities. PFD launched the magazine as United Cities in 2010 at the Third UCLG World Congress of Mayors and Local Governments in Mexico City and at the Mayors’ World Summit on Climate. Having worked on publications focusing on urban development for the World Bank, UN-HABITAT, the Inter-American Development Bank and the Asian Development Bank, PFD’s editorial team saw the opportunity to launch the first global publication dedicated to city leaders. Bringing together the experience of the multilateral sector with that of the private sector and the local governments themselves, the magazine focuses on the challenges and solutions for city leaders and local governments. Analysis, case studies and features cover transport, energy, construction, public safety, infrastructure, planning, finance, and the use of Information and Communication Technology in urban development and management. The magazine was rebranded as Cities Today in 2012 to reflect that the magazine was being produced with a new and diverse editorial board that includes not only members of UCLG but also all of the key intergovernmental agencies and city associations active in urban development.

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) have been shaping the global development agenda for over a decade. With the target date of 2015 fast approaching, determining a new development agenda has become an urgent priority for the international community. Following an agreement by Member States at the Rio+20 summit in 2012, a process has been launched to develop a set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a successor framework to come into effect after the MDGs expire. The new goals are to address the multiple crises facing humanity through a more inclusive process, aiming for equal treatment of the economic, social and environmental dimensions in the implementation. This issue of Dimensions contributes to the debate on the SDGs and, as always, offers a platform for discussion and opinions.

The Conference is organised within the framework of the global ICPD beyond 2014 review on implementation of the Programme of Action agreed upon at the International Conference on Population and Development in Cairo in 1994 (ICPD PoA). The Conference brought together 200-250 representatives of governmental authorities, including high-level officials, academia and civil society organizations, as well as members of national parliaments and other national and international stakeholders to review the progress that has been made towards achieving the goals and objectives of the ICPD PoA in the UNECE region, identify neglected areas, and pinpoint what needs to be done to accelerate the implementation of the PoA and address the emerging issues. The Conference was expected to make recommendations on future policy actions, synergies with the post-2015 UN Development agenda and on how to effectively place the rights, gender equality and empowerment of women, as well as of adolescents and youth, at the core of sustainable development. A webcast of the event is available.
