This is the third in a series of synthesis reports produced by URBAN-NEXUS. These Reports are intended mainly for municipalities, policy-makers and businesses engaged in urban issues. They may also be of interest to organisations, institutions and networks involved in decision-making and developing partnerships to tackle problems encountered in urban sustainable development and management. This includes public sector agencies, utilities, the private sector, civil society organisations and community groups. The synthesis reports will help inform debate and discussion as part of an on-going “structured dialogue” across a network of urban researchers, professionals and actors on developing integrated approaches to the challenges and opportunities of sustainable urban development. The theme for this report is competing for urban land, and was intended to stimulate discussions at the third URBAN-NEXUS dialogue café, held on 10-11 April 2013 in Göteborg, Sweden.

State of the World 2013: Is sustainability still possible?

In the latest edition of the Worldwatch Institute’s State of the World series, scientists, policy experts, and thought leaders attempt to restore meaning to sustainability as more than just a marketing tool. Experts define clear sustainability metrics and examine various policies and perspectives, including geoengineering, corporate transformation, and changes in agricultural policy, that could put us on the path to prosperity without diminishing the well-being of future generations. If these approaches fall short, the final chapters explore ways to prepare for drastic environmental change and resource depletion, such as strengthening democracy and societal resilience, protecting cultural heritage, and dealing with increased conflict and migration flows. A separate report has also been published looking at the issues facing urban youth. This can be found here.

The European Report on Development (ERD) is the main output of the ‘Mobilising European Research for Development Policies’ initiative, supported by the European Commission and seven Member States (Finland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom). The ERD 2013 was prepared by a consortium of three independent research centres: the European Centre for Development Policy Management (ECDPM ), the German Development Institute (DIE), and the Overseas Development Institute (ODI). There is considerable debate in establishing a post-2015 global framework to succeed the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and guide global collective action on development. This report aims to provide an independent contribution to the post-2015 debate by focusing on how best global collective action can support the efforts of developing countries to achieve development.

The Valuing Nature Network unites novel natural science research with economics to bring the natural environment into government and business sector decision making. Indeed it directly supports and demonstrates the policy and business impact of research. This event highlighted successes from the Network, including insights into partnership working between academia, policy and business; and the benefits of working across academic disciplines. Since 1990, the UN’s Human Development Reports (HDR) have attempted to go beyond simple ‘blunt’ measures of progress and development, such as income, favouring instead measures that assess people’s long-term well-being, particularly of those living in the global south. The latest report is concerned with the extraordinary growth taking place in the leading economies of the global south, the impact this growth is having and what this means for the future. It is thus primarily dealing with the economic, social and political global situation and makes no direct attempt to deal with the questions of the future ecological sustainability of the phenomenon of the Rise of the South.
