Major groups and stakeholders from across the globe came together in order to discuss the outcomes of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (otherwise known as Rio+20) held in Rio de Janeiro in June 2012, agree on priorities for action in order to accelerate these outcomes, address areas where no progress or agreement was made and advance the post-2015 development agenda. While it was recognised that Rio+20 has created numerous entry points via new processes for advancing sustainable development, stakeholders focused on five key themes for the event: The new governance architecture post Rio+20, and the potential role of Major Groups, and the space for engagement from local to global levels; Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the post-2015 development agenda, including the role of Major Groups and stakeholders in their design and implementation; The green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication, including Beyond GDP; The 10 Year Framework of Programmes on Sustainable Consumption and Production; A focus on implementation and delivery of the Rio+20 outcomes, including mobilisation of finance, technology and resources. A summary of presentations, think pieces, and background papers are available online.

The Hertfordshire Building Futures Partnership launched a consultation on the new Sustainable Design Toolkit at a stakeholder event held at BRE, Watford on 20 November 2012, marking the start of a process to allow individuals, groups and organisations, including developers, architects and local authorities, to comment and give valuable feedback on the toolkit. The Toolkit is the result of a year-long project, undertaken in collaboration with Hertfordshire local authorities, with help and support from individuals, groups and organisations including the Building Research Establishment, Town & Country Planning Association, the Herts and Beds Constructing Excellence Network, the University of Hertfordshire and members of the Hertfordshire Design Review Panel. Using a virtual townscape, users of the toolkit can choose one of six development types, from extensions to large scale mixed use development, to navigate a wealth of sustainable design guidance on issues such as water, climate change and place making, in a visual and engaging way. A new paper by Michael Jacobs, visiting professor at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics, seeks to locate the concept of “green growth” within the longer tradition of environmental discourse.
