EPOMM, the European Platform on Mobility Management, has developed two new services that are rapidly gaining recognition:

TEMS: The EPOMM Modal Split: This is an online tool allowing access to modal split data from currently more than 330 cities across Europe, with more cities added all the time. This is the first publicly accessible database that allows easy access to such data on a European-wide scale. Users can select a city from the map or compare a group of cities using search and benchmarking options. This allows, for example, to compare all cities in Europe with between 100.000 and 200.000 inhabitants and a cycling modal share of over 10%. The aim of EPOMM is to be able to provide the modal split data of all of the more than 600 European cities with more than 100.000 residents, and to foster discussion on a European standardisation of such data.

MaxEva is an interactive web tool that guides and helps cities to evaluate and collect monitoring data of their projects. It provides an overview of results at any time during the project and automatically calculates the effects in terms of modal split, reduced mileage and reduced CO2-emissions. Projects that have already used MaxEva can be found by using either an interactive map or a search and benchmarking tool. For each project, a large array of background data is available.

As part of the URBACT European exchange and learning programme, the Active Travel Network has produced guidelines for conducting Active Travel Audits. The Active Travel Audit is a self assessment tool carried out by different groups. It’s not intended as a method for benchmarking, but as a means to improve the active travel system in the audited city. The guidelines outline the steps of the audit – how to prepare, run and analyse the audit – as well as defining the participants that should be involved and the skill set of the auditor.

Demolition waste management on the Olympic Park

This report from the Olympic Development Authority considers the lessons learned from the London Olympic Games 2012 construction project. A robust demolition methodology and process was developed which took account of health and safety, sustainability, stringent timescales and immovable programme (affecting time available for reclamation surveys), budget, storage space, and lack of existing buildings designed for deconstruction. This paper evaluates the methods and processes in place to meet the ODA’s key sustainability targets for two key stages: pre-demolition and during demolition.

At the Fifth Regional EST Forum in Asia held in August 2010 in Bangkok, twenty-two participating countries from Northeast, Southeast, and South Asia as well as a number of regional and international transport stakeholders unanimously agreed on the Bangkok 2020 Declaration  in order to demonstrate renewed commitment to realizing a promising decade of actions and measures for achieving sustainable transport in Asia. It was the first time that Asian governments and other transport stakeholders endorsed a joint declaration which incorporates a comprehensive set of goals (20 EST goals) under different strategies within a clear time frame (2010-2020). This Sixth Regional EST Forum in Asia provided an opportunity to not only discuss and share the progress made by countries towards achieving the goals under the Bangkok 2020 Declaration, but also to further discuss the effective implementation of the Declaration. Presentations are available online.
