The 1st International Congress on Ethics and Tourism called for the urgent placement of ethics at the core of tourism development, so as to achieve a truly responsible and sustainable tourism sector. Jointly organized by the Spanish General Secretariat of Tourism and Domestic Trade and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the event was attended by participants from over 50 countries, bringing together some 350 tourism officials, business leaders, academics, representatives of international organizations and NGOs, and experts in the field of ethics and tourism. The UNWTO Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, adopted by the General Assembly of the United Nations ten years prior to the Congress, set the tone for the event’s five panel debate sessions which addressed such issues as ethical frameworks for tourism development, fair tourism, sustainable practices in both the public and private sectors, poverty reduction, the prevention of exploitation, gender equality, accessibility, corporate social responsibility, and environmental protection.  General conclusions from the event are available online together with a copy of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism.

Based on experiences from CIVITAS cities, this workshop invited participants to learn about effective solutions for green urban transport. The workshop looked at solutions in two thematic areas, namely: collective passenger transport, and safety and security. Participants learned what CIVITAS pioneering cities have achieved and how, and were informed of how they can replicate these measures in their own city contexts. Examples from CIVITAS cities were showcased to present what they have achieved through the implementation of their measures; how they cooperated with other cities; and finally, what they learned and how they made use of this knowledge.

The traditional route for academic research is to be published in an academic journal, and subsequent citation of the research is seen as proof of success in academia. However, this route may mean that that the research outcomes stay solely in the realm of academia. This report seeks to understand the knowledge landscape amongst end-users of urban sustainability research in particular. In this study the potential end-users of urban sustainability research are the focus. The broad nature of urban sustainability as a discipline means that these end-users work in a wide range of fields and backgrounds across the public, private and third sectors, and include both practitioners and policy makers. This report concludes with recommendations from this research related to increasing the uptake of academic research amongst urban sustainability end-users.

This empirical study consists of two parts. The first goal of this study is to learn more about tour-ists‘ understanding of sustainable tourism. The empirical survey with 6 ,000 respondents in eight countries identifies the most relevant aspects of sustainable tourism from a tourists‘ perspective. Overall the perception is balanced over the different dimensions. Furthermore, five different types regarding tourists‘ understanding of sustainable tourism are identified in a cluster analysis and a potential market size of sustainable tourism of 22% of all tourists can be identified. A choice experiment with almost 5,000 Swiss respondents is conducted in the second part. It shows that tourists principally favour sustainable tourism products. Although there are clear preferences in favour of sustainable products, it can be shown that the respondents are only willing to pay a small premium for the inclusion of specific attributes in most cases.
