Proposal for a Council recommendation on European Tourism Quality Principles

The European Commission has proposed a set of voluntary European Tourism Quality Principles to ensure that tourists travelling to other Member States or visiting Europe continent from third countries will get value for their money. These principles cover four main areas: staff training under the supervision of a quality coordinator, consumer satisfaction to ensure that tourist can rely on handling of their complaints, cleanliness and maintenance, and correctness and reliability of information in at least the most relevant foreign language. Such access to reliable and up-to-date information on the quality of tourism services enables tourists to differentiate among competing products, to make an informed choice and to overcome linguistic difficulties. Small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) will find it easier to emphasize that they are providing a high quality service by sticking to the principles. The proposal will therefore help SMEs which make up over 90% of the EU tourism sector.

The Global Sustainable Tourism Council’s Destination Development Program

In February 2014, the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in partnership with Sustainable Travel International hosted a live virtual educational presentation with over 300 registrations from around the world. The webinar was presented by Dr. Kelly Bricker, Chair of the GSTC Board, as well as Dr. Louise Twining-Ward and Jeremy Sampson from Sustainable Travel International. Some of the attendees included Kuoni Travel, The Nature Conservancy, PATA, Royal Caribbean, Rainforest Alliance, Sabre Holdings, and numerous ministries of tourism and regional tourism organizations. During the 60-minute interactive gathering, Lara Velasco of Turismo Lanzarote and Dr. Lars Lindkvist of Kenya’s Mara Naboisho Conservancy showcased their “Early Adopter” experience, the first initiative in the Destination Partnership Program. This webinar was the first held in a series of informational programs to put sustainability efforts in the spotlight. Slides and a video recording are available online.

Mintel’s annual UK Holiday Review forecasts “steady year-on-year growth” for UK holiday sales over the next five years. The market-research firm predicts UK consumers will take more than 100 million holidays, overseas and domestic, in 2017, up from 94 million last year.
