ABTA, the Travel Association, today released its Travel Trends Report 2014, developed in association with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. The report predicts cautious optimism in the holiday market for the year ahead with consumers continuing to holiday and planning to spend more than they did in 2013. It also reveals that value for money will remain a priority for many and that package holidays will perform well again in 2014. As well as market trends, ABTA’s 2014 Travel Trends Report highlights destinations to watch for the coming year.

Inquiry Report into the ‘International Competitiveness of the UK Events Industry’

The results of the first ever All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) Events Inquiry into the international competitiveness of the UK events has been published. The inquiry includes a series of recommendations that will support the UK events industry achieve its ambitions to grow from £36bn to £48.4bn by 2020 and bring in a new era of business and consumer events for the country. The inquiry’s key findings included the recognition of the event industry and its potential to be a key driver of the government’s growth agenda by attracting high growth industries to the UK. It found the sector favoured the reduction of interventions that decrease its international competitiveness over additional financial support. Key recommendations for government included a special events visa to be created; the inclusion of the impact of taxation within the event industry in future economic impact studies; and a cross departmental approach with representation from the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills.

European Capitals of Culture: Success strategies and long-term effects

A new study carried out for the European Parliament assesses the long-term effects of hosting the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) Programme. Since 1985 the European Capital of Culture (ECoC) title has been awarded to nearly 60 cities in 30 countries. Over time, the programme has become an important tool for city positioning and a catalyst for economic and cultural regeneration. There are often immediate cultural, social and economic returns and, although harder to evidence, the ECoC’s potential for securing long-term benefits, such as changing the image of a city or developing tourism, has grown. The study highlights common approaches and success strategies adopted by cities. It also documents the strongest claims that the ECoC has had long-term effects and analyses recurrent challenges for the programme to reach its full potential. This report contains a very long bibliography.

This article presents recent statistics on the tourism industries in the European Union. While tourism statistics traditionally focus on either the accommodation sector or the demand side (from a household perspective), and relate mainly to physical flows (arrivals or nights spent at tourist accommodation establishments, or trips made by residents of a country, this analysis is based on economic data extracted from other areas of official statistics, in particular structural business statistics (SBS) and short-term business statistics (STS). Thus a more complete economic picture can be drawn of this sector, which is an important motor for many countries’ economies and labour markets.
