This conference was aimed at anyone involved in the outdoor economy, including activity providers, retail and service providers, voluntary sector, researchers, policy and decision makers and practitioners. The aim was to improve understanding of how outdoor recreation can help fuel economic growth across the country, with presentations and workshops delving into areas such as business growth and jobs in the outdoors, the significance of outdoor recreation in the wider economy, how development is funded and its impacts on local communities. A new report from the UN Environment Programme argues that developing countries with abundant renewable resources are well-positioned to capitalize on the opportunities provided by “green” products to increase their share in international markets for sustainable goods and services. The report analyses six economic sectors – agriculture, fisheries, forests, manufacturing, renewable energy and tourism – where trade opportunities exist, and identifies measures, such as policy reforms and certification, that can help developing countries benefit from these markets. This is the product of over a year of competitive analysis in Britain’s major tourism source markets, and follows last year’s widespread consultation with over 300 businesses. The strategy is built around four key objectives: Building on Britain’s improved international image; Increasing distribution through the travel trade; Broadening the product range on offer; Making it easier to get to Britain.
