The World Tourism Organisation has published the latest World Tourism Barometer, showing that international tourist arrivals grew by 4% in 2012 to reach 1.035 billion, a record number. Emerging economies (+4.1%) regained the lead over advanced economies (+3.6%), with Asia and the Pacific showing the strongest results. Growth is expected to continue in 2013 only slightly below the 2012 level (+3% to +4%).

Since the 1990s the second biggest city of Colombia, Medellin, is undertaking programmes and projects in informal settlements, to try integrate them both physically and socially to the urban fabric. Public space upgrade and community services such as schools and libraries designed by prestigious architects have enriched the atmosphere and to some extent the quality of life, in these impoverished areas. To the point that the barrios of Medellin are commonly visited not only by Colombians but also by international visitors who want to see first-hand the projects and how the settlements and the city have changed. Medellin, perhaps without noticing or anticipating, has found a role for informal settlements in branding the city, and promoting the tourism to those areas. Read this article for more information.

The January 2013 edition of VisitBritain’s Foresight explores the results from a post-Olympics wave of the Anholt Nations Brand Index Survey, looking at how the world now rates Britain across a raft of key tourism attributes. Findings show that 63% of those who saw coverage of Britain hosting the Games agreed it had increased their interest in visiting for a holiday and that 75% think that there are lots of interesting places to visit outside London.

Overseas Travel and Tourism: 3rd quarter 2012

The Office for National Statistics has published the latest tourism statistics for the 3rd quarter of 2012, drawn from the International Passenger Survey. This quarter saw the UK host the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympics. Estimates conducted by The Office for National Statistics are that a total of 470,000 overseas residents visited the UK with a primary purpose relating to the Olympics or Paralympics (to watch, work or participate) during this period and a further 215,000 people attended a ticketed Olympics or Paralympics event although their main purpose for visit was not related to the Olympics. Despite this inflow of Olympics-related visits less people visited the UK in quarter 3. The total of 8.9 million visits (for any purpose) to the UK by overseas residents was 3% lower than in the same period in 2011.
