Following on from the inaugural State of the Industry Report released in October 2011 the Business Events Council of Australia (BECA) has released the second annual State of the Business Events industry Report. The 2011 report demonstrates a strengthening of the industry in numbers of travelers with International business event visitor spend in Australia increasing by 15% and Domestic overnight business event visitor spend increasing by 19%. However it also shows a weakening in State Government funding support of the Convention Bureaus by 28% and this is reflected in the increase in lost bids (5%) and the reduction of successful bids (12%). The correlation between the two clearly demonstrates the impact Government support has on the ability of the States to attract business events.

This article seeks to highlight how that vision of tourism growth has been translating into a reality in the past two years with improvements in infrastructure, tourist arrivals and tourism earnings, and hotel market performances.
