Hotel Energy Solutions: Fostering innovation to fight climate change

In response to the challenge of climate change, the Hotel Energy Solutions (HES) project aims to increase energy efficiency in European small and medium hotels by 20% and their use of renewable energies by 10%, demonstrating that economic growth and sustainability can, and should, go hand in hand. The HES public report summarises the project, including its rationale, steps, main achievements and success stories. It also includes descriptions of the HES supporting materials such as publications and communication materials.

This publication focuses on the evolutions in tourism demand in the European Union in 2011, namely on the trips made by EU residents. It also takes a look at the evolution of the number of nights spent in hotels and similar establishments. The number of holiday trips made by EU27 residents remained stable between 2008 and 2011, while the number of business trips fell by 11%.

A survey conducted to gauge the confidence of the tourism industry in Suffolk has shown that despite wet weather and cautious patterns of consumer spending, 23 per cent of businesses are feeling optimistic about the next three months, and 45 per cent are expecting to perform about the same as last year. 37 tourism businesses were surveyed in May 2012 for Visit Suffolk’s Business Confidence Monitor. Whilst 67 per cent admitted that visitor numbers had decreased against the same time last year, businesses were being proactive to keep their offering strong, with 82 per cent making site improvements and 63 per cent increasing PR and marketing spend.

This paper estimates the economic impacts of leisure marketing campaigns conducted by Visit London in North America, Europe and Australia for London and the UK. This research enhances the methodology originally developed in Working Paper 46, refining both the assessment of the economic benefits of Visit London activity as well as the costs (both direct and indirect) of campaign activity. The enhanced methodology is tested for the first time outside of the North American market.
