This research report presents the results of an evaluation study conducted to assess the impact of the pilot programme of Station Travel Plans (STP) that has been led by the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) and RSSB since 2008. An STP can bring together all the stakeholders with an interest in rail stations (rail industry, local authorities (LA), passenger groups, bus and taxi operators, cyclists, walking groups, and others) to develop and agree common objectives and a coordinated approach to delivering them. The 2007 Railways White Paper asked the rail industry to work with all relevant stakeholder groups to pilot Station Travel Plans.

Crossrail could help create £5.5 billion in added value to residential and commercial real estate along its route between 2012 and 2021 according to new research for Crossrail carried out by GVA, the UK’s largest independent commercial property consultant. The report illustrates how Crossrail will have a marked impact on a number of central London and suburban locations along and around the Crossrail route where the new railway will help stimulate investment in commercial activities, retail and housing. The report findings unveil which areas these are, and what the scale of those changes is likely to be.

The Single European Sky, the flagship project to create a single European airspace, tripling capacity and halving air traffic costs, is “not delivering”, according to Vice-President Siim Kallas, European Commissioner for transport,. He has recently announced his intention to present new legislative proposals in Spring 2013 to accelerate implementation, as well as taking all enforcement actions possible, including infringements where necessary. Inefficiencies caused by Europe’s fragmented airspace bring extra costs of close to €5 billion each year. It adds 42 kilometres to the distance of an average flight, forcing aircraft to burn more fuel, generate more emissions, pay more in costly user-charges and suffer greater delays. The United States controls the same amount of airspace, with more traffic, at almost half the cost.

LSE Cities has launched a new edition of its report which provides an up-to-date overview on the experiences of how cities around the world are making the transition to the green economy. The first part of the report consists of the latest version of a major global survey of city governments that was conducted by LSE Cities, ICLEI and GGGI in the run-up to the Rio+20 conference and the 2012 Global Green Growth Forum in Copenhagen, in order to increase awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of cities as key contributors to this global green transformation. The second section investigates in greater detail the experience of eight case study cities in facilitating green growth. Given the importance of integrating policies for delivering green growth, four cross-cutting policy programmes were examined: land-use and transport (Copenhagen and Hong Kong); eco-districts and buildings (Stockholm and Portland); waste, recycling and energy (Belo Horizonte, Brazil and Dublin); and electric mobility and renewable energy (Berlin and London). Two case study cities were selected for each theme, allowing for comparative analysis, and exploration of how similar objectives are being pursued in different contexts, with different policy tools, and using different types of public-private partnership (PPPs).

This report from the Policy Exchange examines all of the options for increasing airport capacity in the UK and concludes that the best option would be to place four runways immediately west of the current Heathrow site. This would double the existing capacity to 130 million passengers, cementing it as Europe’s premier hub. It also makes a number of recommendations to reduce noise pollution.
