The All Party Parliamentary Group for High Speed Rail is a cross-party group of MPs who believe that Britain needs a modern high-speed rail network. The group’s objectives are to raise awareness of the need for high-speed rail among parliamentarians and to provide a forum for discussion and debate on high-speed rail. The Group has published the findings of its inquiry, carried out to determine: the current capacity situation on Britain’s railways; the capacity Britain’s railways will require in the future; and the best way of providing capacity and future-proofing Britain’s rail network.

Roads reform. A fresh start for the Strategic Road Network: The Government response and feasibility study terms of reference

This is the Government’s response to Alan Cook’s independent review which examined whether the Government had the right approach to operating, maintaining and enhancing the Strategic Road Network. The Government is also publishing the terms of reference for the joint DfT and HM Treasury feasibility study which will build on the work undertaken by Alan Cook, and look at innovative options aimed at bringing more private sector involvement into the strategic road network. Taken together this represents a programme for reforming the road network in both the short and the long term.

Crossrail 2: Supporting London’s growth

In October 2011, London First established a working group of senior business people, chaired by former Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis, to examine the need for additional transport capacity to meet future demand and support London’s continued competitiveness. In particular, the group was tasked with assessing the case for a large-scale intervention in the form of Crossrail 2 and what sort of scheme it should be. This paper sets out the working group’s initial conclusions on the need for Crossrail 2 and identifies a number of key principles that should underpin further work.

The Transport Knowledge Transport Network has written a document, in consultation with industry partners, that gives an overview of the emerging thinking around a Transport Systems Catapult Centre. The Transport Systems Catapult will enable high-value, integrated, efficient and sustainable transport solutions to be developed and commercialised more rapidly in to the UK and Global markets through new cross-sector collaborations between suppliers, industrial customers, industry bodies and policy makers.

Following the economic crisis which began in 2008 and the first positive signs at the end of 2009, 2010 confirmed the recovery of the air transport industry. According to the latest statistics published by Eurostat, between 2009 and 2010, the total number of passengers travelling by air in the European Union increased by 3.4 % to 777 million.
