Organized by Transport Division of the UNECE, this is part of a wider UN initiative to develop a uniform methodology for calculating transport CO2 emissions. It looks specifically how this model might be used to meet UN Requirements and national commitments to reduce CO2 under the UNFCCC requirements. The main objective of the project is to enhance international cooperation and planning towards sustainable transport policies through the development and use of a standard monitoring and assessment tool for CO2 emissions in inland transport (passenger and freight road and rail transport only) including a transport policy converter. Presentations from this expert meeting are available online.
Transport outlook 2012: Seamless transport for greener growth

The mobility projections in this Transport Outlook indicate that global passenger transport volumes in 2050 could be up to 2.5 times as large as in 2010, and freight volumes could grow by a factor of four. Emissions of CO2 grow more slowly because of increasing energy efficiency, but may nevertheless more than double. The projected evolution of mobility depends on income and population growth, and on urbanization. The relation between framework conditions and mobility is uncertain and not immutable and the Transport Outlook examines a number of plausible policy scenarios including the potential effects of prices and mobility policies that are less car-oriented in urban settings. Low car ownership with increased two-wheeler use and somewhat lower overall mobility results in much lower emissions of CO2. Mobility policies can slow down CO2 emission growth but cannot by themselves stop it; energy technology is the key to actually reducing the transport sector’s global carbon footprint.

The initiative GreenFreight Europe, officially launched on 27 March 2012, aims to generate strong market incentives to engage companies across the supply chains in green procurement of transportation services in order stimulate long-term improvements. Therefore, a central database to calculate, validate and benchmark the environmental performance of transportation companies was built and designed. The database is hosted by a neutral and independent body. This way, logistics managers are able to measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their products through green procurement of transportation services. Transportation companies will benefit from attracting climate-conscious customers, understanding their environmental score and getting access to best-practices on eco-efficiency.

The Transport Research & Innovation Portal (TRIP) is the new name given to the former Transport Research Knowledge Centre. While still continuing the main services provided in the past, TRIP, together with its new name, now has a new visual identity and new features to improve the services offered to its users. The Transport Research Knowledge Centre (TRKC), was created in 1997 in order to disseminate and promote transport research and innovation. TRIP users will find an improved search engine and a wider projects database, including an enriched record of project deliverables and documents. Former services will continue as in the past: release of thematic and policy Publications, monthly e-Newsletters and a constantly up-to-date Events calendar of major transport research conferences worldwide.
TRIP has started the production of Policy Brochures. These publications share important information about the critical role transport research plays in policy-making, planning and development in the transport and mobility sector. Two Policy Brochures have been released and are available on the TRIP website:
Innovating for a competitive and resource-efficient transport system
The report highlights the contribution of research, development, and innovation in securing a competitive and resource-efficient transport system in Europe.
Towards low carbon transport in Europe
This report highlights the contribution of research and innovation in meeting the EU targets on CO2 emission reduction in the transport system.

CORPUS is a European-funded project which aims to enhance the connectivity between research and policy-making in sustainable consumption. The third CORPUS Workshop on sustainable mobility, with a focus on “Scenarios and Possible Sustainable Futures” , brought together more than 55 participants from all over Europe, including researchers, policy-makers and civil society representatives, engaged in one and a half days of intensive discussion on future visions of sustainable mobility and their role in policy planning. The specific aims of the workshop were: to learn from good practices in scenario building as a policy tool; to revise the jointly developed research agenda on sustainable mobility; to brainstorm ideas on how to sustain the CORPUS network activities in the area of sustainable mobility; to provide a networking opportunity for European policy makers and researchers in sustainable mobility; and to further knowledge concerning innovative forms and methods of effective knowledge brokerage. Presentations are available online.

The Department of Health asked the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) to produce guidance on local measures to promote walking and cycling as forms of travel or recreation. This guidance aims to set out how people can be encouraged to increase the amount they walk or cycle for travel or recreation purposes. This will help meet public health and other goals (for instance, to reduce traffic congestion, air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions). The recommendations cover: policy and planning; local programmes; and schools, workplaces and healthcare. Details of the consultation on the draft guidance and evidence reviews are available online.
