The village of Poynton in the UK has undertaken one of the most ambitious experiments to date in this type of street design, whose most prominent advocate was the Dutch traffic engineer Hans Monderman. Variations on the shared-space model have been implemented in other European cities since the early 1990s, but never before at such a busy junction. A film is available, documenting conditions before and after the change.

Over eight months the Design Commission took evidence from leaders across the public, private and design sectors on where design is already contributing to public services and how more can be done. The resulting report calls upon government to tackle the dual challenges of making public services better and more cost-effective by putting design at the heart of service development and delivery.
Sir Terry Farrell’s review of architecture and the built environment

Architect Sir Terry Farrell has been appointed by the Government to make recommendations on promoting high standards of design. He will be supported by an expert advisory panel of members from across the architecture and design industry who will look at the themes of the review in more detail. The review is intended to engage architects, designers and other built environment professionals to help the Department for Culture, media and Sport think about its role in achieving high-quality design, allowing it to better influence and shape policy across government. The review will look at four main areas: Understanding the Government’s role in promoting design quality in architecture and the built environment; The economic benefits of architecture; Cultural heritage and the built environment; Promoting education, outreach, and skills.
Homes and Communities Agency: Best practice and guidance

The Homes and Communities Agency aims to share its experience through best practice and guidance. The HCA has published or worked with its partners on a number of documents to helping local authorities and other partners to maximise delivery in their areas. A library of external guidance and research that may be of use is available through downloads and synopses, together withcase studies. Guidance is available under the following themes: affordable housing and Section 106; design, planning and quality; environmental sustainability; and growth, economic assessment and viability.

This report presents the summary and main conclusions of the Barcelona Dialogue Café workshop (held on 17-18 October 2012, in Barcelona).
