Defra policy evidence plans

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has produced a series of evidence plans for different policy areas which make significant use of formal evidence, including plans for water availability and quality; waste and resources; sustainable economy; sustainable land and farming; landscape and outdoor recreation; flood and coastal erosion risk management; biodiversity and ecosystems; atmosphere and local environment; and climate change. The evidence plans will be used to help ensure the link between evidence and policy development and implementation. The evidence plans set out evidence needs for a 5 year timeframe and will be updated roughly annually to reflect any major changes in evidence needs as a result of changing policy.

CEEQUAL is the evidence-based Sustainability Assessment and Awards Scheme for civil engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and the public realm, and celebrates the achievement of high environmental and social performance. CEEQUAL’s Outstanding Achievement Awards were presented on 11 March 2013. A diverse group of high level representatives from all stakeholder groups gathered at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) to discuss a new initiative which aims to produce a systematic worldwide analysis of water issues.  The Water Futures and Solutions: World Water Scenarios initiative will forge a broad institutional partnership bringing together the scientific community, governments, decision makers, as well as civil society, NGOs and private sector. Waterways Forward Project Final Conference. Paris, 7-8 November 2012

Because of the many benefits that inland waterways can deliver, a coordinated approach to their management and development is required, linked to the wider sustainable development of the regions through which they pass. How this can be best done is the aim of an EU-funded project Waterways Forward. The final conference was held to present insights for exploring and exploiting the great potential of these waterways for economic development and employment in line with Europe 2020 strategic objectives. A set of policy recommendations was agreed which it is hoped will be taken forward by EU policy makers. These can be viewed online.
