This report from Tourism Concern reveals the stark inequities of water access and consumption between tourist resorts and local people in developing countries, and demands concerted action by governments and the tourism sector to protect community water rights over tourist luxury. Featuring research from Bali, The Gambia, Zanzibar, and Goa and Kerala, south India, the report finds that the unsustainable appropriation, depletion and pollution of water by poorly regulated tourism are threatening the environment, while undermining living standards, livelihoods and development opportunities of impoverished local communities.

Retrofitting surface water management can provide exciting opportunities to manage local flood risk, diffuse water pollution and can deliver urban design and amenity benefits. To encourage the uptake of retrofit solutions, CIRIA recently published Retrofitting to manage surface water (C713) guidance. This guide deliberately challenges many of the current conventions applied to managing surface water runoff and puts urban design at the heart of future solutions. The new guide deals with the engineering aspects of retrofitting surface water management measures, covers the organisational and governance aspects of drainage and looks at the need for adequate funding. The guidance also focuses on appraisal approaches, how different agencies can work better together, public expectations and why delivering multiple benefits are important. Three launch events were held in Bristol, London and Leeds, and delegates gained an overview of the work completed and how this has drawn on experiences from both the UK and overseas. Presentations from the London event are available on video while interviews with a number of industry experts can be seen here.

In 2011 the Government and its major environmental agencies embarked upon a major change to the way it wanted to see delivery of the Water framework Directive. In particular it is looking to deliver plans and measures at a local level with the active engagement of a wide range of stakeholders and communities. The aim of this conference is to share the learning emerging from the early stages of this process, consider the major objectives of the WFD programme in 2012, in particular how plans will link together, and then a range of issues that will help inform the roll out of the approach from 2013 and beyond, including funding, information provision and integration. Presentations are available online.
