This report is the first in a series of thematic assessments that European Environment Agency (EEA) is publishing in 2012 to support discussion and development of the ‘Blueprint to safeguard Europe’s Water Resources’. The report builds on earlier EEA reports describing the state of Europe’s water resources and the pressures they face. It focuses on resource efficiency and describes the opportunities for more efficient water use and avoiding pollution across all sectors, while staying within sustainability boundaries.

Drying up: What to do about droughts in the People’s Republic of China

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has released a publication which explores the difficulties that China will face in supplying its cities with water and in managing more frequent and longer droughts in the face of climate change. A case study of the Guiyang Municipality in the Guizhou Province is presented to illustrate how demand management can be used to manage and prevent droughts and provide sustainable water supplies. The study looks at optimal infrastructure for management and sustainable supply, as well as ecosystem management.

The aim of the conference was to raise awareness and brief a wide range of stakeholders on the EU’s blueprint to safeguard Europe’s water process. It focused in particular on a number of the technical issues that have been raised by the process including:  the strategic vision for Europe’s water, water scarcity, research and innovation, ecosystem goods and services, climate change impacts, closer integration of WFD- CAP objectives and water footprinting with a view to scoping the issues that enables responses from participating organisations and individuals. Waterways: Contributing to the vision for a Greater Manchester

A new report by British Waterways calls on councils in Greater Manchester to do more to exploit the benefits of canals and rivers to the local economy. Recommendations include: Regeneration of waterways to be fully integrated in strategic planning across the Greater Manchester Combined Authority; New canal-side developments to maximise the interaction with waterways and an improved canal corridor environment; Policy makers to use Policy Advice Note: Inland Waterways for guidance on how  waterways contribute to the economic, social and environmental agendas.Demonstrate the value of waterways to Local Transport Plan and Local Sustainable Transport Fund priorities, working with Transport for Greater Manchester; Market waterways of Greater Manchester to maximise visitor potential, including currently underused and unmanaged waterspace.
