ALTERNet: A Long-Term Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Awareness Research Network
ALTER-Net brings together 26 leading institutes from 18 European countries. They share the goal of integrating their research capability to: assess changes in biodiversity, analyse the effect of those changes on ecosystem services and inform the public and policy makers about this at a European scale. Originally funded by the European Union’s Framework VI program to stimulate a collaborative approach, ALTER-Net is now operating independently.
Green infrastructure does not receive anything like the investment or management that goes into grey infrastructure. CABE’s Grey to Green campaign fuels a debate about whether this is smart, given the dangers of climate change and the opportunities to improve public health.
Cities and Biodiversity Outlook
The Cities and Biodiversity Outlook project (CBO) is the world’s first global analysis of how projected patterns of urban land expansion will impact biodiversity and crucial ecosystems. The CBO stems from Decision X/22 of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity’s COP10 in Nagoya, Japan, 2010, requesting the Executive Secretary of the Convention to prepare an assessment of the links and opportunities between urbanization and biodiversity. The Cities and Biodiversity Outlook highlights a wide range of successful initiatives by cities, local authorities and sub-national governments in both developed and developing countries. It demonstrates that there are strong incentives for cities, local governments, the business sector and other interested parties, to invest in natural solutions and to maintain vital ecosystem services. The scientific work is a partnership between the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Stockholm Resilience Centre (SRC) and Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI).
Clean Thames Now and Always is a group of environmentally conscious Londoners from all around the city, who are passionate about the possibilities of implementing state of the art blue-green infrastructure to improve and protect the Thames eco-system and improve our environment for all Londoners, in the short and long term.
Countryside Recreation Network
The Countryside Recreation Network (CRN) is committed to exchanging and sharing information to develop best policy and practice in countryside recreation across the UK and Ireland. This is achieved through networking between our member organisations, organising research meetings, holding seminars and distributing the information to the wider audience through e-zines, a published journal and publications freely available on this website.
The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB)
is a major international initiative to draw attention to the global economic benefits of biodiversity, to highlight the growing costs of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, and to draw together expertise from the fields of science, economics and policy to enable practical actions moving forward.
Nature and biodiversity issues covered by the European Commission.
The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union. Its task is to provide sound, independent information on the environment.
Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco Towns (GRaBS)
The GRaBS project is a network of leading pan-European organisations involved in integrating climate change adaptation into regional planning and development.
To facilitate knowledge and experience exchange on green infrastructure (GI) across Europe, CEEweb for Biodiversity and the European Centre for Nature Conservation (ECNC) have launched a LinkedIn Group for European GI practitioners. CEEweb in cooperation with ECNC has also created a ‘Green Infrastructure Knowledge Hub’, with amongst others GI cases and best practice examples targeted at specific stakeholders.
Green Infrastructure North West

Green Infrastructure to Combat Climate Change
This website holds information, documents, and links to help make the most of the climate change services provided by green infrastructure. It was developed under the auspices of the North West Climate Change Action Plan, with Community Forests North West commissioned by the Northwest Regional Development Agency on behalf of the Northwest Climate Change Partnership. The work was supported through the Interreg IVC GRaBS (Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco-Towns) project.
Greenleaf Urban Tree and Landscape Products
Greenleaf was set up to research and provide solutions for assisting trees in their battle to establish in urban spaces. With the goal of drastically improving urban planting success and increasing leaf canopy in urban areas, Greenleaf analyses the challenges, the causes of failure, and the reasons for premature mortality in urban trees. It also examines the negative impact poor planting can have on urban infrastructures and presents solutions and designs practical products and systems to address them.
The main and overarching objective of the GREENNET project is to support and strengthen policies, strategies and approaches to safeguard an interlinked ecological network with a special focus on non-legally or low protected ecologically valuable areas in the Central European Green Belt.
Aregistered charity which works to improve parks and green spaces by raising awareness, involving communities and creating skilled professionals.
ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Centre
ICLEI’s Cities Biodiversity Centre is coordinated by the ICLEI Africa Secretariat and is located in Cape Town, the Republic of South Africa. The Cities Biodiversity Center has a global mandate to work on biodiversity-related matters.
Integrated habitats design competition
A good source of inspiration on the use of green space in an urban environment is the designs submitted to the first ever Integrated Habitats Design Competition (IHDC), run by the charity RESET in association with CIRIA and livingroofs.org. The focus of this competition is to ensure that working with nature, adapting to climate change and enhancing biodiversity is integral to the design of new urban, suburban and rural built developments. It is hoped that the IHDC will provide a forum for visionaries and innovators to design better, more sustainable habitats for all. Details of the winning entries are available.
The Institute champions landscape, and the landscape profession, through advocacy and support to our members, in order to inspire great places where people want to live, work and visit.

The Urban Biosphere Initiative (URBIS)
The Urban Biosphere (URBIS) Initiative has launched a new website, with an interactive map, providing an online resource platform on sustainable urban development and effective biodiversity management. Users can obtain efficient access to publications, guidelines as well as case studies from around the world (which can be conveniently searched for by location, Aichi Target and/or by ecosystem service addressed.
VALUE stands for ‘Valuing Attractive Landscapes in the Urban Economy’ and is a project funded through the European Union Interreg IVB programme for North West Europe. The project brings together 9 project partner organisations in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. The challenge is to establish where to target green infrastructure investments in cities and regions to deliver the greatest economic benefits while ensuring that high quality green infrastructure is protected and integral to the urban fabric.
