2012 Legacies for Learning

The Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Hospitality, Leisure, Sport and Tourism (HLST) was awarded funding by JISC (Joint Information Systems Committee) for the development of Open Access and Open Educational Resources (OER) on the theme of the Olympic and Paralympic Games and their legacy. The project’s purpose is to identify, develop as necessary, make accessible and promote resources which can support higher education programmes in engaging students in learning. London 2012: learning legacy

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) has launched a free-access online knowledge resource of more than 250 documents charting the learning, innovation and best practice from the construction of the London 2012 project. The Learning Legacy marks the first time a UK construction project has sought to capture intellectual capital on this scale. The resource is a collaborative approach between the ODA, contractors, professional institutes, government bodies and academia. Under the initiative the organisations involved are taking ownership of ten themes to help businesses raise the bar in areas such as design and engineering, planning, procurement and project management. In addition it sets out how the ODA tackled issues such as getting more women into construction, building better health and safety records, creating a green landscape from a former industrial site and completing projects on time and within budget. The website will be added to over time, forming a comprehensive online library.

London Legacy Development Corporation

The Development Corporation, which came into being on 1st April 2012, will continue the work of the Olympic Park Legacy Company (Legacy Company), as well as manage some of the assets and responsibilities of existing regeneration agencies in the area, such as the London Thames Gateway Development Corporation (LTGDC). It will also have greater powers over the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park (the name for the Olympic Park after the Games) and in October 2012, the Development Corporation will also take over planning powers from LTGDC and the Olympic Delivery Authority. The purpose of the Mayoral Development Corporation is: “To promote and deliver physical, social, economic and environmental regeneration in the Olympic Park and surrounding area, in particular by maximising the legacy of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, by securing high-quality sustainable development and investment, ensuring the long-term success of the facilities and assets within its direct control and supporting and promoting the aim of convergence”
