Short Synopsis.
An exploration through sound and illustration into the ‘bits and shapes we’re told to hide’, with commission from The White Chapel Gallery, and using pink bits illustrations as a bridge into the appreciation of the female body and social media, I am to connect Audio, Art and social media. Narrated by an eclectic range of female voices, you will follow the art and audio to feel inspired and motivated within the thick thighs and untrimmed body hair.
Long Synopsis.
In reference to the Illustrations from ‘Pink Bits’ an Instagram profile sharing illustrations of the female body, covering all body types, ages and ethnicities with a total of 37.8K followers, I was inspired to educate myself on the online community dedicated to body positivity and self love, how it effects young women using social media as a consumer, People at the forefront of the movement, and people who are under this umbrella due to their work (i.e. Models). As a curvier girl myself, this is a personal educational journey into this growing community and it’s importance. Asking important questions such as ‘Why is it important to show our true selves online?’ and ‘what can we do as body positivity activists to ensure every young young feels comfortable online?’ I aimed to dig deep and pull to the surface the true and real side of body positivity and it’s potential scope.
Talking to a range of different women, including prosthetic makeup artist Maya Man and actresses Alice Sykes (BBC Criminal Justice, Cradle to the grave) and Jessica Barden (The Lobster, End of the Fucking world) about their recreational social media use and how it can and has affected their body confidence. Along with Kate Hislop, Australian born Plus size model and about the pressure of social media within the modelling industry, and Honey Ross (Screen writer and daughter of Jonathon ross) about growing up in the public eye, and how that has compelled her to be a social media activist, who is at the forefront of Online campaign ‘Pink Protests’.
I aim to provide an experimental gateway into sound art, and documentary style podcast. Meaning the audio is accessible through podcasting platforms and Sound cloud under ‘The Chronicles of big girl’ series in association with The White Chapel Gallery’, so that it can be listened to in any circumstance. With a sound scape of famous speeches and pop culture dialogue and music, followed by an exploration of social media use in conjunction with body positivity and self-love. The audio is presented in two parts, the first an experimental response to the ‘pink bits’ Illustrations and the second part an educational journey through interviews pinpointing social media usage and body positivity.
