The cast of Avatar: The Way of Water have stepped out for the films world premiere in London, 13 years after the original film was released. But is it worth the wait?

More than a decade after Avatar, one of the highest grossing films of all time, was released in 2009 – it’s overdue sequel is scheduled to be released next week.

As director James Cameron walked the blue carpet in Leicester Square last night, he was joined by old and new faces of his cast. Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña and Sigourney Weaver (suprisingly) were all joined by newcomers Jack Champion, James Flatters, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss and Academy winner Kate Winslet as they graced the carpet to take pictures for the sequel’s premiere.

The first film, that grossed a total of $2.92 bn (£2.39bn), is the highest grossing film of all time – despite momentarily losing its title to Avengers: Endgame in 2019. However, it quickly reclaimed its status after its re-release.

The first film followed disabled, former marine Jake Sully (played by Sam Worthington), who travels to the unacquainted world of ‘Pandora’, the habitat of the ‘Na’vi’, a race of extraterrestrial, blue humunoids – where he then acquires the avatar body.

However, by the end of the film, he ends up joining the native population in a fight against humans to destroy their land in order to gain a valuable mineral.

Avatar: The Way of Water follows the original film many years later, focusing on Jake, his family with Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and their new life in Pandora.

After several drafts of the script and many delays, its sequel is finally ready to hit cinemas next week and those that have been lucky enough to see the movie before its release have taken to social media to voice their initial thoughts.

With the sequel expected to double the box office debut of the first movie, it seems that Cameron may have a new record on his hands.

Avatar: The Way of Water, comes out next week Friday in cinemas everywhere.
