#BrexitChaos: Stephen Barclay and Amber Rudd as new cabinet ministers

Live Updates: Stephen Barclay has been appointed as the new Brexit Secretary post Raab resignation. While, Amber Rudd returns to the cabinet as Work and Pensions Secretary, after McVey quit yesterday. 

Friday, 11 am: 20 MPs have reportedly submitted their letters of no confidence in the Prime Minister but Michael Gove stands his ground.

After surviving a tough grilling in the House of Commons on Thursday, the PM now has to defend herself from betrayal in her own party.

48 letters of no confidence must be sent to the backbench 1922 Committee for a change in Conservative leader to be made. That’s 15% of the Conservative party.

Michael Gove environment secretary, however, won’t be quitting as he wants too “ensure the best outcome for the country”, a source told the BBC.

Other MPs have said he has rejected the empty position as Brexit Secretary after Dominic Raab’s swift exit.

According to Sky News these are the 20 MPs who have presented letters of no confidence in May.

Thursday, 9:00 am: Work and Pension Secretary Esther McVey has resigned- an hour after Dominic Raab, Brexit Secretary quit stating: “he cannot in good conscience support” the UK’s draft deal with the EU.

In his resignation letter to the PM, Raab, states “I cannot reconcile the terms of the proposed deal with the promises we made to the country in our manifesto at the election.”

While McVey in her letter to Theresa May said: “The deal you put before the cabinet yesterday does not honour the result of the referendum.”

Dominic Raab’s undersecretary and Tory MP for Fareham, Suella Braverman has also just resigned following the deal. She stated that this was “not an easy decision”.

The news comes after yesterday’s five-hour cabinet meeting, where Theresa May assured the public that the cabinet backed the Brexit withdrawal agreement, adding that it was “a decisive step” according to BBC.
