Honouring entrepreneurial spirit, pursuit of success and creative talents of the next generation, The Accounting & Management Society (A&M) hosted a Cupcake event extravaganza at Westminster Business School on March 6th, 2013.
Students and academics from all University of Westminster campuses were invited to meet Johnny Earle CEO and Head Baker of Johnny Cupcakes. Establishing a prominent t-shirt brand at the age of 19 and voted America’s 2008 #1 Young Entrepreneur by Businessweek, Johnny Earle delivered his inspirational Johnny Cupcakes Lecture Series to a packed audience.
He spoke about his experience of building a brand, a business and a community of Johnny Cupcakes Community– tying it all to his beliefs and living by them everyday. This was especially evident as he made sure to speak to all who queued to have their photos taken with him. While talking about business he emphasised on the power of paying attention to detail in: design, delivery, service and the often underestimated packaging of goods. This stayed true throughout the lecture ‘packaging and delivering’ Johnny Cupcakes style back to basics common sense that is often overlooked and taken for granted by many.
Here are some of his words of wisdom edited and supplemented by Dr. Ioannis P. Christodoulou:
- Get some real life experience. Try- fail – learn – evolve.
- “Experience is the name that we give to our mistakes” as long as we learn from them!
- Trust your gut feelings within your experience.
- WORK NOW – PLAY LATER
- Make time for your ideas
- NETWORK
- Thrive for longevity – don’t try to make a quick buck
- Make clients not sales
- Put your personality in your business cards and CV’s
- Make some “Monkey Math” – maybe you have or you can find money without investors – risk is needed.
- Great importance in building a positive team and learning to delegate.
- FAILING IS IMPORTANT – LEARN FROM IT!
- Real success is being happy doing what you love
- Give back to your community
- When meeting new people: first impression(s) is everything!
- Stay unique – stay creative – and stay true to yourself
- “LUCK HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT! – STOP MAKING EXCUSES – WORK IT OUT”
In keeping with the theme of bakeries and cupcakes the A&M Team not only wore JonnyCupcakes aprons but also with the support of the Student Union treated all attendees with deliciously decorated cupcakes from Crumbs and Dollies.
Lastly this event was made possible with the provision and tremendous support of Westminster Business School Senior Lectures Dr. Ioannis P. Christodoulou and Zorica Patel.
Also special thanks go to Diana Huth (T: @DianaHuth) for taking fantastic photos on the day, you can also hear her interview with Johnny Earle: 1 / 2 / 3 / 4.
