We are pleased to announce that our School of Computer Science and Engineering have launched two new industry relevant courses. The new courses – Cyber Security and Forensics BSc and Software Engineering with Electronics BEng – will launch in September 2023 and are open to applications now.

Cyber Security and Forensics BSc

Our new Cyber Security and Forensics BSc is designed to meet the ever-growing demand for qualified experts. With computers being central to all aspects of our daily lives and the majority of industries relying on them, the need for improved computer security has never been greater. This means that there’s a growing demand for specialists in cyber security and digital forensics.

The course combines the theoretical aspectsneeded to deal with threats and investigating malicious acts with the practical aspects and skills that graduates need to work in a challenging and demanding environment.

Course Leader Ayman El Hajjar said,

“We are very excited about the launch of the new Cyber Security and Forensics BSc course. Cyber Security and Forensics is an essential part of every organisation to protect data and mitigate threats. Businesses need to be proactive in preventing cyber incidents in such a dynamic landscape. The application of the Cyber Security and Forensics concepts into real world problems and scenarios will allow students to gain advanced skills and the knowledge needed with the soft skills to work and adapt to this changing environment.”

Students studying the Cyber Security and Digital Forensics BSc will have access to a dedicated forensics computer lab and over 30 computing laboratories with an extensive range of specialist and industry-standard software.

Software Engineering with Electronics BEng

The new Software Engineering with Electronics BEng has been created to meet the need for engineers and software developers to be entrepreneurial and equipped with software and hardware engineering know-how. With smart technologies and artificial intelligence systems becoming ever more advanced and widespread in our society, today engineers and programmers more than ever need to harness their creative potential. To fully harness this potential and ensure that good design choices are made, engineers and software development professionals need to have a deep understanding of the underlying physical machines and interfaces that their code will run on, monitor and/or control.

The course has a very practical outlook. The practical skill development activities will be supported with teaching in the areas of coding, cyber security, electronics, efficient algorithmic design, signal processing, sensors, analytics for sensory data, operating systems and the scheduling of concurrent real-time processes and systems. Students will also have the opportunity to choose their own path within the course based on their interests with a range of optional modules that will enable them to develop skills in robotics, digital electronics or broaden their software engineering knowledge.

Martin Giles, Course Leader for the Software Engineering with Electronics told us,

Students will be able to put into practice the knowledge and skills they have learnt to develop new devices, solve real-world problems and make better the world we live in. Change the world and dare to be an engineer!”

Graduates will be able to operate within the field of embedded systems engineering and many trending, emerging and enabling technological areas such as smart cities, autonomous vehicles, robotics, gaming, hybrid energy, wearables and medical electronics such as Fit-Bit.

The Cyber Security and Forensics BSc and Software Engineering with Electronics BEng are both intended to fulfil the educational requirements of the British Computer Society (BCS) for the CITP (Chartered IT Professional) and partial CEng (Chartered Engineer). Students from September 2023 are expected to be fully accredited upon graduation.
