Commercial and industrial waste is the final piece of the puzzle in the rapidly developing waste infrastructure landscape of the UK and Ireland, but delivering facilities is increasingly challenging without a proper understanding of the nature and future of this feedstock. The Chartered Institution of Wastes Management has commissioned this report to review current available datasets, forecast future arisings, determine the likely required treatment and processing capacity, and liaise with industry stakeholders on what is happening and what needs to happen.

Low carbon resilient development in the least developed countries: Emerging issues and areas of research

Low-carbon resilience has become the new buzzword in climate change policy; it is an agenda that tackles reducing carbon emissions (climate change mitigation) while simultaneously building climate resilience (climate change adaptation) and supporting development in a supposed win-win policy agenda. This approach is linked to green growth policies, low carbon development and low emission development strategies and is also supported by negotiations at the UNFCCC that are seeking to find linkages between these agendas. Although least developed countries (LDCs) are responsible for less than five per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions; nine of them have developed plans to bring together these three issues into one single agenda. Our research has found, however, that the rhetoric is greater than the actions and a learning-by-doing approach is necessary to generate robust evidence on where to find, and how to support, ‘win-wins’.

The traditional view of a low-income informal settlement is of overcrowded space that has both high population density within its land area and within each dwelling. This paper investigates whether this high density is observed in practice, and whether it is perpetuated in other forms of low-income housing, both community-developed (in settlements upgraded through participatory processes) and public housing. This is done through spatial analysis of housing and settlement form and function, household surveys of socio-economic characteristics and satisfaction with living conditions, and in-depth interviews with residents.

A report from the House of Commons Public Accounts Select Committee argues that while the Department for Transport has done well so far to deliver the first phase of the Thameslink infrastructure project to time and under budget, progress in securing new trains and letting a new franchise to run the route has been much less encouraging. The Committee also expresses concerns about the Department’s skills and capacity to complete Thameslink by 2018, alongside its ambitious wider portfolio of programmes and projects.
