“if you’re reading this, wondering if the WEA is right for you, the answer is a resounding yes.” – Chandana Chandran
So, why join the WEA? Imagine it like this: we’re standing at the foot of a mountain, eager to climb but unsure of the path. The WEA becomes our sherpa, our guide, our cheerleader. It equips us with the skills and knowledge to navigate the terrain, introduces us to fellow adventurers, and helps us summit our career goals with a sense of triumph and camaraderie.
My personal WEA journey was all about unlocking doors. Stepping into the program as a student felt like stumbling onto an immense number of opportunities. The WEA pathways assisted me in everything from sharpening my resume, networking, accessing career mentoring, and becoming a confident communicator. Sharing my stories and anxieties with fellow WEA team members also created a sense of community or support system, in the sometimes -chaotic world of study.
Further, by becoming a WEA leader, I wasn’t just navigating my own path; I was helping others chart theirs. Outreach events turned into exhilarating platforms, to help other students to discover the opportunities offered by the programme. It wasn’t just about explaining benefits; it was about sharing genuine excitement, the kind that comes from knowing you’ve come across something truly valuable.
Completing the different WEA pathways, attending workshops, networking, and utilising the mentorship are the keys to unlocking the WEA’s true potential. Remember, everyone starts somewhere, and sometimes the most rewarding journeys begin with a single step outside our comfort zone.
So, if you’re reading this, wondering if the WEA is right for you, the answer is a resounding yes. It’s more than just an award; it’s a community, a compass, and a launchpad for your career dreams.
“I strongly encourage all university students, regardless of their year or major, to enrol with the WEA.” – Anjali Yadav
When I first signed up for a postgraduate gold award, I was eager yet uncertain about how the program would benefit me. Looking back now, having reached the platinum level, I’m incredibly grateful for the many skills, experiences, connections, and personal growth the WEA has provided me. Participating in the Westminster Employability Award (WEA) over the last few months has been a transformative experience that has enriched my university journey and prepared me thoroughly for future career success.
The sheer variety of workshops, training sessions, internships, volunteering opportunities and other activities opened my eyes to the wealth of resources and support available on campus. From substantially improving my CV, interview style and LinkedIn presence to gaining invaluable experience, the WEA gave me an organised framework and the tools I needed to feel prepared and confident for entering the professional world post-graduation.
The award also continuously motivated me to step outside my comfort zone. Becoming a WEA Leader, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on sustainability solutions and taking on substantial volunteering and mentorship roles have transformed me into a proactive, adaptable, and self-assured individual. I’ve found a passion for community education efforts, discovered vital aspects of my identity, and strengthened intrapersonal skills that I know will help me tremendously in any workplace.
I strongly encourage all university students, regardless of their year or major, to enrol with the WEA- starting early in their academic careers. It serves as the perfect training ground to complement your traditional studies. The structured format gives you space to regularly try new pursuits, build an impressive, holistic resume tailored to your aspirations and reflect on your personal and professional evolution over time.
My top tip for new members is to fully utilise knowledgeable advisors who can expertly match activities aligned with your strengths and interests. I also recommend pushing yourself to earn extra points through supplemental challenges rather than just completing the minimum program requirements. Looking back, I’m so grateful I took that initial step to sign up at the start of my year. I was crossing major award milestones, like presenting my Gold Award to the network. I steadfastly validated months of effort and confirmed that the WEA has set me up for future impact and fulfilment. I can’t wait to keep developing as I strive for the highest platinum level.
