1. BodPod Body Composition Analysis
The BodPod is a scientifically validated device used to assess body composition, including body fat percentage and lean mass. This egg-shaped chamber uses air displacement to calculate your body density.
How to Prepare:
- Fasting: Avoid food and drink (except minimal water) for 2–3 hours before the test.
- Clothing: Wear tight-fitting clothing (e.g., swimsuit, compression shorts, or sports bra). Avoid cotton. A swim cap will be provided.
- Skin: Do not apply lotions, oils, or creams on the day of the test.
- Accessories: Remove all jewellery, watches, and metal items.
- Exercise: Avoid strenuous activity within 2 hours of testing.
- Hydration: Be normally hydrated, but don’t overhydrate.
- Restroom: Use the toilet beforehand, as fullness may affect measurements.

2. VO₂ Max Testing (Maximal Oxygen Consumption)
VO₂ max is the gold standard for assessing aerobic fitness. This lab-based test uses a treadmill, rowing machine, or stationary bike, with intensity increasing gradually until exhaustion. Participants wear a breathing mask and heart rate monitor.
Before Booking:
- Complete a pre-service questionnaire.
- If any medical conditions are reported, GP clearance is required. (Email ihul@westminster.ac.uk for a template letter.)
- If you’re 40+ and train less than 3 hours/week, a submaximal version will be used.
- If you’re under 40, healthy, and train more than 3 hours/week, you may qualify for the maximal test (final approval on the day).
How to Prepare:
- Questionnaire: Complete the health form in advance.
- Fasting: Eat a light meal 2–3 hours before; don’t fast or overeat.
- Clothing: Wear athletic clothing and supportive trainers.
- Hydration: Stay well-hydrated throughout the day; avoid drinking large quantities an hour before.
- Caffeine: Avoid for 4–6 hours before the test.
- Alcohol: Avoid for 24 hours prior.
- Exercise: Avoid intense exercise 24 hours before testing.
- Sleep: Get 7–8 hours of rest the night before.
- Medications: Notify your practitioner of any heart, blood pressure, or respiratory medications.

3. Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) Testing
This test measures how many calories your body burns at rest, which is key for weight management and tailoring your diet and exercise plan. During the test, you’ll sit or lie down while wearing a mask or mouthpiece that monitors your breathing.
How to Prepare:
- Fasting: No food for 4–12 hours before the test. Water only.
- Caffeine: Avoid all caffeine for 4–6 hours prior.
- Alcohol: Avoid for at least 24 hours.
- Exercise: No moderate or intense activity for 24 hours prior.
- Clothing: Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
- Rest: Arrive early to stay calm and avoid rushing.
- Breathing Equipment: A mask/mouthpiece will measure your oxygen and carbon dioxide.
- Duration: The breathing portion lasts ~20 minutes. Remain still and breathe normally.
- Medications: Inform your practitioner about any relevant medications.
