As the holiday season approaches, my social media feeds are filled with reels and posts that stir a deep nostalgia for me, especially since I won’t be spending these meaningful days with my family. Therefore, I’ve decided to write a post reflecting on my experience of being away from home during the holiday season, along with some tips on how to enjoy and make the most of this time, even when you’re apart from loved ones.
Enjoy a deserved break
First, I’ve planned to take a few days off after I completed my coursework and classes. With deadlines for all my assignments at the end of the semester, I have been overwhelmed with back-to-back projects, making it easy to lose sight of the importance of taking a break. A short pause allowed me to refresh and prepare for the holiday season. During these days, I have been able to do fun activities with my friends, such as attending Hijingo (Bingo). This innovative, high-energy bingo experience combines live entertainment, technology, an immersive atmosphere and exciting prizes for a different and chill night out. However, there are numerous other events to join in London, such as visiting Christmas markets, Winter Wonderland, ice skating, and attending theatre productions and musicals, among others.
Part-time seasonal work
I’ve decided to pursue a full-time, seasonal job in December because staying productive is important for my well-being. I applied for a retail position, but many other opportunities are available. It’s important to note that the recruitment process for larger companies can take longer, so it’s helpful to keep multiple options in mind. Engaging in work helps me make the most of my time by providing a sense of accomplishment and connection to the community, while it allows me to develop my soft skills and earn some extra income. In addition to the retail job, I found a part-time opportunity through the Engage website, the University of Westminster’s employability platform. I secured a part-time Spanish tutor position from January onwards with a company focused on helping people improve their foreign language skills. To apply, I submitted a form detailing my work and academic experience, followed by an interview with case-related questions to assess my suitability for the role. During the interview, I showcased my teaching background and ability to engage with primary school children.
Socialize with diverse network of friends
Living in a co-living space has enabled me to connect with people from diverse backgrounds through fun and creative activities such as neon painting. These experiences have helped me build great friendships. Earlier this month, two friends organised a dinner before everyone headed home, which provided a fantastic opportunity to share and create lasting memories. I highly recommend sharing traditions with friends when you can. Whether decorating together, cooking a traditional recipe, or simply listening to music, these small activities help create deep connections and provide a comforting sense of belonging.
Keep in touch with family back home
Finally, it is essential for me to keep in touch with my family during significant moments, such as December 7th. This day holds special meaning for us as we celebrate a close family member’s birthday along with El Día de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles). This cherished Colombian tradition marks the start of the Christmas season. Even though I’m far away, staying connected through video calls and sharing these moments virtually helps me feel close to home despite the distance.
