The Big Society

The House of Commons Public Administration Select Committee has published the findings of its inquiry into how the Big Society project is being implemented in practice. The Committee has expressly not undertaken a detailed evaluation of the merits of the Big Society concept. Instead it set out to examine the role of the Government in enabling the development of the Big Society project, and in particular, to consider the policy implications of the Government’s commitment to open up of public services, which the Prime Minister described as “more significant” than the other parts of the Big Society project, such as measures to increase social action. In their report, the Committee warns that the Big Society project is hampered by the lack of a clear implementation plan, leading to public confusion about the policy agenda, eighteen months into this administration. The project by its very nature requires substantial change in Whitehall and to the nature of government.
