Biodiversity offsetting

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee launched an inquiry into the Government consultation on Biodiversity offsetting in England, which proposes to introduce a system for allowing biodiversity loss associated with developments to be measured and offset against compensatory biodiversity gain elsewhere. The Committee has published a report of its findings, concluding that while Government plans to introduce a system of ‘biodiversity offsetting’ for new building developments could enhance the way the planning system accounts for the damage done to valuable natural habitats, the proposals must be improved to properly protect Britain’s wildlife and woodlands.
