This paper, produced by the Future Cities Catapult, reviews the origins, definitions and uses of the phrase ā€˜future citiesā€™, and related terms like ā€˜smart citiesā€™ or ā€˜sustainable citiesā€™. It examines how different communities have interpreted ā€˜future citiesā€™, including: citizens; governments; corporations; and academic institutions. Finally it considers how the way we speak about cities can affect how they are being designed and built.
