It is not as easy as translating your bricks and mortar strategy to an online platform. Nor can you simply upgrade your existing e-tail model. No, global e-commerce is highly complex because market conditions vary hugely between countries due to differences in internet penetration, smart phone usage, demographics, regulatory climate, logistics and transport infrastructure, and industrial real estate options. Mastering these factors can provide a platform for your success. This white paper, the first in a series of three, takes a close look at the hurdles and opportunities, changes and challenges business face when entering this dynamic landscape.

The House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee launched an inquiry into the Government consultation on Biodiversity offsetting in England, which proposes to introduce a system for allowing biodiversity loss associated with developments to be measured and offset against compensatory biodiversity gain elsewhere. The Committee has published a report of its findings, concluding that while Government plans to introduce a system of ‘biodiversity offsetting’ for new building developments could enhance the way the planning system accounts for the damage done to valuable natural habitats, the proposals must be improved to properly protect Britain’s wildlife and woodlands.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is increasingly mandated for construction projects but most focus has been on BIM for buildings. Many of the same advantages of BIM are applicable in design, construction and management of infrastructure projects but some of the challenges in realising these are very different. A recent webinar from the New Civil Engineer, in association with Excitech, set out to explain how BIM techniques can be adopted in simple steps. This web seminar introduced, as a reminder, the potential benefts of BIM for infrastructure. Some of the challenges for BIM in infrastructure were then discussed along with some of the potential solutions. Real-life examples from the water industry and highways sector showed what can be achieved.

This paper provides incentive planners with a broad overview of what to do when an unlikely event, such as a natural disaster, government/labour unrest, a transportation disruption, a medical emergency, or an act of terrorism or violence, occurs. Although the paper’s authors concede that there is no single management technique for every identifiable risk, they do offer some key resources for planners to consult with, and offer a template for developing a plan.

London needs 50,000 new homes a year, the equivalent of 18 new Olympic Villages and roughly double the current building rate, to address its growing housing crisis, according to international real estate adviser, Savills, in a new report. The report argues that homes are needed across all tenures. Over a third (31%) of the requirement is for affordable homes (including anything not at market price), 27 per cent for market sale, but the biggest requirement (41%) is for homes available to rent.
