In this paper the centre-right think tank Policy Exchange argues that the country’s housing estates were ‘nothing short of a national embarrassment’. The paper calls for the establishment of an ‘estates recovery board’ to complement the troubled families programme, the pooling of government funding, and working with police and crime commissioners.

At Budget 2014 the government announced the creation of a new Urban Development Corporation to develop plans for a new garden city at Ebbsfleet, Kent, capable of providing up to 15,000 new homes. The government is also making available up to £200 million of infrastructure funding to kick start the development. Comments on the proposals are requested by 6 October 2014.

Delivering sustainable buildings: Savings and payback

New research is challenging the perception that sustainable buildings are more costly to construct by presenting costs and savings associated with a range of sustainable building strategies. The research team from Sweett Group and BRE has applied cost data from real construction projects to three case study buildings, an office, secondary school and community healthcare centre, to produce detailed capital and operational cost information. Their report presents the costs of a range of individual sustainability strategies, and the additional costs (if any) of achieving various levels of overall building sustainability. In addition it reveals the associated payback to be gained from reduced utility costs. Price £45.
