The Strategic Framework for Tourism in England 2010 – 2020, launched in March 2010, identified the need to develop a series of Action Plans to assist in coordinating and driving forward priority actions. Nine Action Plans plus the All England Marketing Strategy were published in June 2011 and implementation is being driven forward and monitored with industry partners. Three Action Plans have been working to a different timetable due to the complex nature of the issues they focus on and the need to reflect on the changes to the delivery landscape and Government policy impacting on these three priority areas. These three draft Action Plans have now been published, covering: Quality; Skills; and Transport and tourism. The Action Plans are not exhaustive lists of actions. These are the actions that the public and private sectors need to implement to ensure that the visitor economy in England continues to thrive, compete and grow in this three year period – and in transport’s case – over the ten year life of the Framework. Comments are requested by 1 March 2012.

The Government recently produced a scoping document for developing a new Aviation Strategy. The starting point for this scoping paper was that aviation should be able to grow, but to do so, it must be able to play its part in delivering our environmental goals and protecting the quality of life of local communities. This paper is the Tourism Alliance response to this scoping paper which sets out the need for aviation expansion in order to support tourism growth.

The purpose of the report has been to explore how well the UK airports are currently connected to key international business destinations compared with ‘rival’ airports in Europe. The report, published in August 2011, looked at the four main ‘hub’ airports: Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle, Schiphol and Frankfurt. It also looked at the flights from all the airports serving the ‘hub’ cities: London, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt, as well as Manchester and Munich.
