In recent years, the European Centre for Nature Conservation has collected an extensive number of practical examples which aim to encourage people who wish to become involved with biodiversity, inspire them and show them that local biodiversity can effectively deliver services. As part of this collection, numerous examples of biodiversity activities by local and regional authorities and businesses from around Europe have been included. The booklet is divided into six themes which deal with food, water management, climate change, pollution, human well-being and biodiversity conservation.

The theme of the congress was ‘Conservation on the Edge’. It attracted conservation practitioners and researchers from Europe and around the world to engage in debates and discussion concerning conservation science and practice. One of the aims of the congress was to develop the participation of those involved in marine and coastal conservation, in addition to those concerned with terrestrial conservation. This document provides guidance on how best to ensure that activities related to the development and management of inland waterways are compatible with EU environmental policy in general and nature legislation in particular. Particular attention is given to explaining how to develop integrated projects which aim to take account of the river’s ecological processes early on in the design process. This guidance document also outlines the procedures to follow when carrying out an appropriate assessment under Article 6 of the Habitats Directive.
