The Global Programme of Research on Climate Change Vulnerability, Impacts and Adaptation (PROVIA) is a global initiative which aims to provide direction and coherence at the international level for research on vulnerability, impacts and adaptation. Launched with the support of leading scientists and decision-makers, PROVIA responds to the urgent call by the scientific community for a more cohesive and coordinated approach, and the critical need to harmonize, mobilize, and communicate the growing knowledge-base on VIA.

This was the final conference of the CIRCLE-2 project, marking 10 years of European cooperation in climate change impacts, vulnerability and adaptation research. The full conference report is now available, and is intended to contribute to the development of future research in support of climate change adaptation in Europe. The interaction between biodiversity, climate change and protected areas are the focus of this issue of Our Planet. Protected areas are important carbon storage facilities, so their maintenance and expansion is a key contributor to mitigating climate change. Ahead of the climate change summit to be held in Paris in 2015, A distillation of the major findings of the fifth assessment report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has been published. Known as The Synthesis Report, the document pulls together all the various strands of the different AR5 documents published by the IPCC over the last year or so. Three Working Group reports are also available.

A new report looking at young people’s attitudes to climate change. Supported by the Grantham Institute at the London School of Economics, it is the first study to ask young people themselves how to engage their peers more effectively, and to propose and test new climate change narratives specifically designed to engage 18-25 year olds.

This definitive assessment is the result of years of intensive work by leading experts in the field. It provides the most comprehensive look to date at the widespread impacts and risks of climate change and the opportunities for response. The full version of the Working Group II report includes a Summary for Policymakers, a Technical Summary, 30 assessment chapters, cross-chapter boxes, frequently asked questions, and high-resolution graphics.
