The sustainable development goals: Will they deliver climate compatible development for vulnerable countries?

The Open Working Group (OWG)’s proposal for the sustainable development goals (SDGs), to be presented to the United Nations General Assembly at the end of September 2014, features climate change as a goal and also recognises climate change impacts in some of the targets under other goals. Over the next year of inter-governmental negotiations, there is an opportunity to further refinement of the goals. The Climate & Development Knowledge Network held national dialogues in Colombia, Kenya and Indonesia to facilitate an exchange of views among stakeholders from across government, civil society, academia and the private sector on how best to include climate change in the SDGs in a way that encourages climate compatible development. This paper highlights key concerns and principles that emerged in the three consultative events, and ways that these principles could be implemented in practice.

Business for Social Responsibility has issued a summary report to distil key findings on the effects of transport on climate change from the recently released Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fifth Assessment Report. The report includes implications for road, rail, air, and shipping and is part of BSR’s Business in a Climate-Constrained World Initiative.

The next EU climate and energy package: EU climate policies after 2020

This study assesses the status quo of EU climate and energy policy and experience with the current set of targets and instrument, and distills from it concrete recommendations for a new package for the period until 2030. In this study, a group of authors from Ecologic Institute’s climate and energy team take stock of the current targets and policies and draw lessons from the experience so far, resulting in concrete recommendations for improvements for the the future, in particulr towards 2030. They also assess the Commission’s proposal against this backdrop and find it lacking, despite steps in the right direction.
