The state of natural capital: Towards a framework for measurement and valuation

The Natural Capital Committee (NCC), an independent advisory body to Government, has published a report outlining their approach for the better measurement, valuation and management of England’s natural capital. The Report does not aim to be comprehensive, but sets out strategic priorities and corresponding actions to fulfil the NCC’s remit. It also identifies current knowledge gaps, some of which the Committee intends to address in subsequent reports.

Hamburg- European Green Capital 2011: Final report

The City of Hamburg has outlined its experience as European Green Capital (EGC) 2011, detailing its efforts to win the prestigious title as well as the huge amount of activities arranged during the year. The Final Report looks at such initiatives as the city’s Environmental tours and the “Train of Ideas” – an actual train housing an exhibition on environmental issues and urban sustainability that toured 17 European cities. The report also delves into the logistical side of the city’s EGC tenure, such as its communication strategy and the campaigns launched by public enterprises, higher education and scientific institutions.

Indicators in practice: How environmental Indicators are being used in policy and management

This new report produced by the Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN) and Yale University, examines the role of indicators in environmental policy making, and quantifies measurable impacts. The lead author Alex de Sherbinin, senior research associate at CIESIN, discusses the findings in a video interview on the Yale University website, where you can also download the report and read a blog discussion.

Incorporating the natural environment and the services it provides within conventional, economic decision making is one of the major challenges facing the UK and indeed global community; both economic and environmental sustainability are intimately entwined. The Valuing Nature Network unites novel natural science research with economics to bring the natural environment into government and business sector decision making. Indeed it directly supports and demonstrates the policy and business impact of research. This event highlighted successes from the Network, including insights into partnership working between academia, policy and business; and the benefits of working across academic disciplines. In October 2012 the European Commission outlined its proposals to streamline environmental impact assessment. The proposals are intended to lighten administrative burdens and make it easier to assess the potential impacts of major projects, without weakening existing environmental safeguards. Over the next year Member States will provide feedback to the European Commission on their view of the proposals. This conference  provided an opportunity for a wide range of stakeholders from different perspectives including developers, policy makers, legal experts, regulators and EIA and other appraisal practitioners to set out their views. The OECD Environmental Performance Review Programme provides independent assessments of countries’ progress in achieving their domestic and international environmental policy commitments, together with policy relevant recommendations. They are conducted to promote peer learning, to enhance countries’ accountability to each other and to the public, and to improve governments’ environmental performance, individually and collectively. London’s Quality of Life Indicators Report 2012

The London Sustainable Development Commission’s fourth Quality of Life Indicators report provides a snapshot of London’s quality of life and identifies the sustainability issues London faces.  The indicator set encompasses 33 headline indicators across the environmental, social and economic spheres.  It provides baseline data that will inform the Commission’s future work programme and advice to the Mayor.
