For the fifth year, ACI EUROPE presents its economics report on the key financial and economic characteristics of the European airport industry. The report again provides an overview of the developments in such diverse categories as revenues, costs and profitability of European airport operators. The results of the report point to an industry which has weathered the financial and economic storms of recent years, but one which has also had to adapt and change, not least in relation to operating costs and capital investment plans. The report also sheds light on the significant difference in trading conditions facing EU and non- EU airports, which, while in part a reflection of contemporary trading conditions, was also very much due to more deep-rooted structural economic differences, and as such is likely to remain a reality for some time to come.

This guide focuses on the most important EU programmes for the tourism sector3, around practical questions: type of tourism-related actions eligible for funding; type and level of funding; who can apply and how to apply. It also points at concrete examples of what has been funded under previous programmes, as a possible source of inspiration. The guide will be periodically revised to provide more recent examples of funded actions and updated information on the new programmes. Conceived as an entry point to specialised websites, this guide contains many internet links.

The purpose of this special issue of the journal European Planning Studies is to study policy and planning strategies in shrinking cities in Europe. The contributions conceptualize different ways in which shrinking cities have responded to tough times and population losses in a number of ways. The term “shrinking city” refers here to a densely populated urban area with a minimum population of 10,000 residents that has faced population losses in large parts for more than 2 years and is undergoing economic transformations with some symptoms of a structural crisis.

The TIDE (Transport Innovation Deployment for Europe) project recently published two important handbooks on innovative transport measures. The TIDE Impact Assessment Handbook is a practitioners’ guide to cost-benefit and impact analysis of innovative urban transport measures. The handbook can be applied to a wide range of measures, and can therefore be used by cities across Europe. The assessment method developed by TIDE is the result of an extensive review of current transport project appraisal methods referred to in scientific literature and in practitioners’ guides and handbooks. The second publication, the Transferability Handbook, was developed using the same approach as the Impact Assessment Handbook, with a review of current methodologies and substantial involvement from city representatives and TIDE partner cities. The Transferability Handbook describes the methodology developed under TIDE, and is illustrated with concrete examples demonstrating how it can be applied to innovative measures within each TIDE thematic cluster. This will be available shortly at http://www.tide-innovation.eu/en/

In 2014, the Central and Eastern European (CEE) EU Member States celebrate their 10th anniversary of EU Membership. This was reason enough for the ESDN to look into the National Sustainable Development Strategy (NSDS) processes of 8 CEE Member States (Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) and what experiences they’ve made since EU accession. The main purpose of this Quarterly Report from the European Sustainable Development Network is thus to explore the impact of the EU accession on the NSDS processes in the CEE countries. In so doing, a comparative stocktaking of NSDS processes in CEEs is provided, based on up-to date information of the ESDN Country Profiles and telephone interviews with policy-makers from national government ministries of the eight countries.
