The Infrastructure Carbon Review sets out a series of actions for government, clients and suppliers to reduce carbon from the construction and operation of the UK’s infrastructure assets, in line with the UK’s climate change commitments. It is argued that recommendations have the potential to reduce up to 24 million tonnes of carbon and save the UK £1.46 billion a year by 2050. The Review is developed jointly by government and industry though the Infrastructure Cost Review and Green Construction Board.

Building Information Modelling (BIM) is increasingly mandated for construction projects but most focus has been on BIM for buildings. Many of the same advantages of BIM are applicable in design, construction and management of infrastructure projects but some of the challenges in realising these are very different. A recent webinar from the New Civil Engineer, in association with Excitech, set out to explain how BIM techniques can be adopted in simple steps. This web seminar introduced, as a reminder, the potential benefts of BIM for infrastructure. Some of the challenges for BIM in infrastructure were then discussed along with some of the potential solutions. Real-life examples from the water industry and highways sector showed what can be achieved.

The infrastructure investment challenge has commanded increasing levels of attention amongst national governments in recent years. The Public Private Partnership (PPP) model in response to the infrastructure investment challenge has been adopted in more than forty countries around the world amidst budgetary constraints and in the absence of a ‘viable alternative’. This report presents a timely and credible update of the role of Public Private Partnership (PPP) within the confines of the global infrastructure investment challenge within what has been a radically transformed financial and economic paradigm. It specifically looks at five key PPP markets namely: Australia, Canada, India, the UK, and the USA. The research outlines the increasingly urgent need for new investment models, better data analysis and increased capability in infrastructure delivery.

The government has published its Strategic case for HS2, presenting a large amount of background research to explain step-by-step why HS2 is the best solution to meet the capacity and connectivity challenges faced by the rail network. Research is being published by DfT alongside the ‘Strategic case’ and includes reports on rail alternatives to HS2, and various reports concerning the department’s guidance on conducting transport appraisals which are also relevant to the assessment of HS2, including on issues such as values of travel time savings, demand forecasting and sub-national impacts.
