A 17-strong international tutor team of practising architects, researchers in architecture and urbanism, artists, and linguists are leading this years’ Urban Transcripts workshop on the city, to be held on 3-9 December 2012. Focusing on London’s actual problematics, combining on-site visits, urban explorations, studio work and social events, the workshop is an interdisciplinary exercise in understanding the urban condition and working towards collaborative solutions. The workshop is open both to students and non-students; it will be of particular interest to students past their 2nd year of study, postgraduate students, and recent graduates, in disciplines related to the study of the city and urban intervention; notably architecture, urbanism, planning, geography, the social sciences, and the arts. Further details of the event, together with listings of reference, can be found online.

This document from VisitBritain provides an indication of how Britain was perceived during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games based on the feedback of VisitBritain’s staff who were monitoring the media and national sentiment in overseas markets. Perceptions of Britain’s creativity, heritage and Culture, arts and music, and diversity seem to have been huge positives for the destination across the board. Weather, food, and transport and security seemed to have remained largely neutral, whereas perceptions of Britain as a value for money destination seem to have suffered somewhat.

Frontline Consultants was commissioned by the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) and funded by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) to review duty holder implementation of The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007 (CDM 2007) on the construction of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (London 2012). The objectives of this research are to: review the effectiveness of the 2007 Regulations as implemented by duty holders for the construction of the new 2012 venues against the criteria set for the CDM revision during 2005/6; assess the extent to which the Regulations assisted the management of health and safety during the construction of the new 2012 venues; identify examples where the Regulations produced obvious and demonstrable benefits in both health and safety and business delivery terms and the extent to which such benefits can be transferred to the construction of other sites; identify any requirements within the Regulations which affected good health and safety performance or which were considered burdensome or unfair, or inhibited the competitive environment with little overall benefit to improved health and safety performance; and capture the good practice and present it for dissemination by HSE, ICE and ODA in a way that will inspire and enable a genuine and lasting health and safety legacy from the construction of the games to benefit construction across Britain. This report is part of a suite of research projects and independent evaluations undertaken on health and safety at work on the London 2012 construction programme.

This article appears in the Proceedings of the ICE: Water Management, Vol.165, Issue 8, September 2012. Following completion of the site investigation, the remediation design and soil remediation phases on the Olympic Park, the focus turned to the remediation of the underlying groundwater contamination. As with the soil, the groundwater aquifers had also been impacted by the downward migration of contamination following historic industrial activity in the area. This contamination required treatment by a number of techniques to protect both the surrounding watercourses that dissect the park and the underlying groundwater aquifers from further impact.

While it praises the many legacy achievements so far, a report from the regeneration think tank, Centre for Cities, urges the London Legacy Development Corporation, which is leading the post-games regeneration of the Olympic Park, the five host London boroughs, the Mayor of London and the government to learn from the successes and failures of previous host cities. The Centre proposes a five-point plan.
