Practical considerations in doing research inclusively and doing it well: Lessons for inclusive researchers

This Methodological Review paper from the National Centre for Research Methods follows on from an earlier Review, Conducting qualitative research with people with communication, learning and other disabilities: Methodological challenges (2008). That earlier review concluded that the practical, political and ethical challenges of inclusive research, together with the sensitivities of the process, were being embraced not just by the pioneers in the field but by researchers in different disciplines who would no longer be conducting research on people with learning and communication difficulties but with them. This paper builds from the conclusions of that earlier review, but is distinctive in that it is concerned only with doing research with, rather than on, people with learning disabilities and others. The focus is on the practicalities of such research, often known as participatory research, that is research that ‘involves those being researched in the decision-making and conduct of the research, including project planning, research design, data collection and analysis, and/or the distribution and application of research findings. The paper also looks at research done by people with learning disabilities, often labelled emancipatory research. The focus is on researching in ways that are respectful and inclusive of the community being researched, on problems they feel ownership of, in ways that support them and that involve collaboration and openness.

The Amsterdam Centre for Urban History represents the largest research group in the Netherlands for the study of urban history. With about 30 established scholars and PhD candidates specialised in the field, the Centre aims to explore the history of urban societies from a long-term and broad geographic perspective: from Antiquity to the modern era, from Europe to Africa and the Middle East. Scholars at the Centre focus on a wide range of themes: from urban governance, economy, class and gender relations, to religion, ethnic identity, crime, health, housing, planning, leisure and representation. Most of the research, however, emerges from one fundamental question:  how do people from various backgrounds live together in densely populated cities, in harmonious or more antagonistic ways?  The role of institutions and the contested uses of urban space figure prominently in many of our research projects.

Over the past four conferences, Critical Tourism Studies has profiled itself as a network of scholars who share a vision of producing and promoting social change in and through tourism practice, research and education. It has done this so far by seeking to legitimise the critical school of thought in tourism studies and by providing an inclusive environment for new and alternative voices in the academy. The fifth conference in the series focuses on whether and how the ‘production and promotion of social change’ can be facilitated and achieved. In this context scholars from tourism studies and the wider social sciences were invited to explore the potential of critical practice and activism in academia, and the role of the academic community in achieving social change. Presentations are available online.

A preliminary report on the INFOBASE contents (to December 2013) has just been released, and a more complete report will follow in 2014. Analysis of its contents will provide a better understanding of how climate adaptation research has evolved over the last decade.
