The National Platform for Construction, via the MBE KTN and Transport KTN, convened a workshop that brought together construction professionals, academia and the wider supply chain to produce a roadmap for research and innovation in the UK transport sector. The workshop formed part of UK engagement with a new European Construction Technology Platform (ECTP) initiative “reFINE” (Research for Future Infrastructure Networks in Europe), with the view to provide UK input into the reFINE roadmap that aims to shape calls in the forthcoming Horizon 2020 research fund in 2014.

This brochure, published by the European Commission, aims to provide a tool to better communicate about project(s) and achieved results. This short guide gives some examples of successful communication activities, offers a word of warning about commercial organisations seeking to sell their dissemination services and provides an elaborate checklist to develop a sound strategy for communication about the work. Moreover it informs about legal requirements and expectations starting at the negotiation phase right up to the end of the project and how the European Commission, can help coordinators increase their outreach, for example by publicising events and results via the European Commission websites.

Research uptake and impact: are we in danger of overstating ourselves?

Wary of the pressure that researchers are under to demonstrate impact, Louise Shaxson, Research Fellow in the Research and Policy in Development (RAPID) programme at the Overseas Development Institute, injects a dose of realism into the debate around what that impact ought to look like. Researchers must provide clear policy messages, carefully define the relevance of their research, be realistic about what can be achieved, and be clear about whether they’re practising research communication or advocacy.

This Thematic Research Summary (TRS) has been produced as a part of the activities of the Transport Research and Innovation Portal (TRIP) project. The purpose of TRIP is to collect, structure, analyse and disseminate the results of EU-supported transport research and research financed nationally in the European Research Area and selected global research programmes. The Thematic Research Summaries provide a structured guide to the results of research projects carried out mainly at EU level, either as part of a framework programme or as a study commissioned by the European Commission. These summaries are intended for policy makers at European, national and local levels, stakeholders and researchers. This TRS presents an overview of EU-funded research on traffic and transport management for all modes, covering both freight and passenger transport. The scope of the topic includes influencing the way in which existing transport systems and infrastructure are used and new approaches to the management and control of traffic.

The European Commission is preparing a strategic framework for transport research, innovation and deployment, based on the White Paper’s vision for an integrated, efficient, safe, secure and environmentally friendly European transport system by 2050. The first proposals for this framework are presented in this Communication, adopted in September 2012. The Communication summarises the achievements of the European transport sector in research and innovation, outlines remaining issues and presents ideas for better serving the needs of European citizens and businesses. The Commission aspires to facilitate coordination of public and private research and innovation efforts across Europe. Addressing the challenge of deploying innovative transport solutions is of particular interest.

The European Metropolitan network Institute

The European Metropolitan network Institute (EMI) has developed a Knowledge and Research Agenda on the actual problems cities and metropolitan areas come across when implementing policies to stimulate sustainable urban transport. It is argued that until now, research findings are insufficient to lead cities to more sustainable mobility systems. To contribute to this process and take the agenda a step further, EMI is actively engaged in building a broad Multiannual Knowledge and Research programme with a consortium of cities and their stakeholders. A report on the EMI Knowledge and Research Agenda, based on a year-long intensive search for the most imminent research needs, as articulated by urban practitioners and academics, is available. One of the outcomes outlined in this agenda is that, when it comes to sustainable urban mobility, city policy-makers tend to focus on citizen behaviour, land-use planning and governance, whereas academic researchers are especially interested in regulation and pricing issues. City practitioners and academic researchers both feel more research is needed on the following themes: Lifestyle and behaviour, urban space and scale; regulation and pricing; ITS and technology; and governance.
